GF82.61-P-2003QM Navigation, Function
- with CODE (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio
- with CODE (527) COMAND APS (with navigation)
- with CODE (530) COMAND APS USA (with navigation system)
- with CODE (813) Voice control system (VCS)

Function requirements:
^ The Radio and navigation unit (A2/56) is activated.
^ The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is activated.

The menu for controlling the navigation system is activated by the voice command "Navigation". The voice control system (VCS) can then be operated with the voice commands for the navigation system. One complete destination can be entered via voice input. Depending on size, place names can be spoken directly, or spelled out at any given time. Street names, centers, intersections have to be spelled out. If a destination is entered, the navigation can be started. An ongoing navigation can be aborted via voice command. No destination can be entered while a navigation process is running.

Spelling and matching
In order to determine the most likely hits from the words spelt out the so-called matching (comparing the letters with a list on the navigation CD) is necessary. While the letters are being entered, the navigation system prepares the matching process. The preparation mainly consists of building the necessary matching list from the entries on the navigation CD. This build-up can occur directly from the entries on the navigation CD. The VCS transmits the recognition results to the navigation system (approx. 5 alternative sequences of letters, sorted by recognition probability). The recognition result is evaluated or compared to the already created matching list by using the matching algorithm. The result is a list of the most probable options. The programs and data for matching and the structure of the matching list are provided by the navigation manufacturer. The matching algorithm is a procedure which filters out from the incorrect alphabetic chains the most likely meaning from an available list.

The results after matching are then shown on the display of the navigation system.
The user can now select a city from this list by speaking the number of the desired location.

Entering an address
The navigation system must be in navigation mode in order to be able to make address inputs. The address can be entered in several entry steps (entry of the location, entry of the street, intersection, and house number). Next, navigation can be started. There are two input alternatives, either to enter a complete address for each language or a part of the language and to specify the rest via the audio unit keyboard.

Entering a city
After entering the voice command "Enter location" the vocabulary for entering place names is activated as complete words in the voice control system.

The size of the vocabulary, in other words the number of cities that can be entered using whole words depends on the VCS destination hardware. These cities can be spoken "naturally" (e.g., Stuttgart, Munich, Ulm).
The results of the voice recognizer are numbered and shown, arranged by recognition probability, on the navigation system display. The user can select the desired destination city by speaking the appropriate number. After the VCS switch is operated (S93/2) in first user mode a window on the navigation system, which issues the possible voice commands to him, is displayed to the user. The destination last entered in writing or by voice (place or road) is in the 1st row.

Only the names of larger cities can be spoken. The smaller villages and towns can only be entered by spelling them out or via the audio unit keyboard.

Spelling the city
With this function all city names can be entered in semi-spelling mode. In addition it is usually enough to speak the initial letters (5 to 6 letters) of the place name in order to describe it clearly. Here the voice recognizer for spelling is activated. Following input of the initial letters (5 to 6 letters) a comparison is made with the navigation system data bank. The results are shown on the navigation system display. If the desired place name occurs in the lists displayed, then the desired place can be taken over with the voice command "Take over number X".

Entering the street
Entry of the street name is carried out in the same way as the entry of the place name in spelling mode. In doing so, the entire number of possible streets that exist in the selected city are represented by the navigation system. If no digitized streets are available, then this is notified to the user by the voice control system.

The navigation system determines the current destination data and shows a window with the possible voice commands. It is generally sufficient to speak the initial letters (5 to 6 letters) of the street name in order to describe this clearly.

Entry of a house number or starting navigation
The user can now either start the navigation or, if this is possible for the selected street, also enter a house number. In larger cities the streets are digitized down to the appropriate house numbers. It is now possible to select the desired house number via voice command.
A window again shows a list with the possible voice commands. The user can now select the desired input as usual.

Entering a complete address
After the input of the voice command "Address" by the navigation system the user is requested to enter the destination address via the VCS [voice control system] and carries out the complete dialogue. A complete destination can be entered without a break using this voice command.

Starting navigation
If a valid destination was entered, then navigation can be started via voice dialogue.

Save the navigation destination memory (entered destination)
If<> a destination has been entered via the audio unit keyboard or the VCS, then the current destination can be taken over in the address book using the voice command "Store destination".

Changing the destination area
For the navigation system there is a Digital Versatile Disk (DVD) on which several countries are digitized. These countries can only be addressed individually, in other words only the destinations of the country that is currently active on the DVD are selected. In order to be able to select a different country on the DVD via voice command, the "change destination area" voice command was introduced.
