- as of 1.6.04

Component Identification:

The times that are specified are merely intended to indicate the short duration of the sidebag inflation and deflation process.

Side impact collision
If a side impact is detected by the left sidebag and windowbag sensor (A53/1) or the right sidebag and windowbag sensor (A54/1), the lateral body acceleration data are transmitted to the restraint systems control unit (N2/7). The restraint systems control unit (N2/7) checks the plausibility of the data. If plausible, the following squibs are ignited in the event of a side collision from the left:
^ Front left sidebag squib (R12/20)
^ left rear sidebag squib (R12/11)

In the event of side collision from right:
^ Right front sidebag squib (R12/21)
^ right rear sidebag squib (R12/12)

The WSS (Weight Sensing System) control unit (N2/13) detects the occupancy of the front passenger seat with the aid of the pressure sensor (B48/4). In order to determine whether a child seat is present, the belt tension sensor (B48/3) is also read in by the WSS (Weight Sensing System) control unit (N2/13) and the relevant message sent to the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) via the Controller Area Network Bus class B (interior) (CAN-B). If the front passenger seat is unoccupied or a child seat has been installed, the right front sidebag squib (R12/21) is not deployed.

If there is a fault in the seat occupied recognition, the right front sidebag squib (R12/21) is deployed for safety reasons.
