Date: November 2006
Order No.: P-I-82.95/520A
Supersedes: P-I-82.95/520
Group: 82

Revised:
Changed - Version Coding, Section C, page 3

SUBJECT:
MODEL 211.265/282/283 with SA CODE (384)

MODEL YEAR 2004

DIGITAL TELE AID CONTROL MODULE RETROFIT

WARNING:
Do not disconnect the negative battery cable. Extensive reprogramming requirements are otherwise necessary. Wiring harnesses are therefore electrically active. Severe vehicle damage, personal injury, or death from electrical shock could result. Exercise extreme caution while executing these installation instructions. Keep the ignition and radio powered OFF through the final test.

Notes on MOST optical fibers

- Optical fibers damage easily-handle optical fibers with care to prevent cuts, nicks, abrasions, and crushing.

- Optical fiber "ring configurations" must form a closed loop to function (i.e. couple the input of a component with the output of the preceding component).

- Identify MOST optical fibers by their orange, semi-rigid insulation.

- Electromagnetic interference (EMI) from bundled vehicle electrical harnesses does not affect optical fibers.

A. Preparing for the Installation

1. Fold down the rear seat backrests.

2. Remove the stowage compartment behind the rear seats by pushing it forward from the rear and unhooking the clips (Figure 1).

3. Behind the rear seat, remove the carpeted cover over the telephone electronics compartment.

a. Remove the plastic screw cover (A, Figure 2)

b. Remove the T40 Torx bolt (B, Figure 2)

NOTE:
The carpeted cover is removed and laying upside down on the load compartment floor in Figure 3.

c. Use assembly wedges at both ends of the cover (A, Figure 3) to release the front clips (B, Figure 3).

d. Pull the cover toward the front of the vehicle to release the rear clips (C, Figure 3).

e. Remove the insulation covering the telephone electronics compartment (D, Figure 3).

B. Retrofitting the Digital Tele Aid Control Module

1. Remove the analog Tele Aid control module and install the digital Tele Aid control module.

- See WIS document AR82.70-P-7000TB, "Remove and installing telecommunication control unit"

NOTICE:
Incorrect installation of connectors can result in damaged, bent pins. Damaged, bent pins will result in component malfunction or failure. Inspect connectors before and after installation.

C. Version Coding

1. The retrofitted digital Tele Aid control module is not activated. Activate the digital Tele Aid control module by following the Preliminary Draft of "DAS Procedure - Digital Tele Aid Control Module Retrofit" posted on Star TekInfo.

- Also see posted on Star TekInfo, the Preliminary Draft of "MMI Overview - Digital Tele Aid Control Module Retrofit"

NOTE:
Tele Aid version coding the Electronic Ignition System (EIS) control module and Central Gateway (ZGW) via Star Diagnosis is necessary. This version coding is missing from at least the 2002 production of Model Year 2003.

NOTE:
The instrument cluster must be HW 40/02, SW32/02 (A211 540 84 11) or newer. The Tele Aid Defective warning appears for 5-10 seconds before it is removed during Ignition On operations.

D. Function Testing and Final Assembly

1. Reinstall the carpeted cover over the telephone electronics compartment behind the rear seat.
