AR46.10-P-0100AM Remove/Install Steering Wheel












1 Activate the service mode in the TELE AID emergency call system

NOTE: See notes regarding the Tele-Aid emergency call system

DANGER:
- Risk of explosion from explosive gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns from swallowing battery electrolyte. Risk of injury through burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries
- No fire, sparks, naked flames or smoking
- Wear protective gloves, acid-resistant clothing and safety glasses. Pour battery electrolyte only into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

2 Disconnect ground cable of battery

NOTE:
- Turn key in electronic ignition switch EIS into position "0". Key cannot be withdrawn.
- Vehicle fitted with code (889) Keyless-Go Switch off engine, remove Keyless-Go cards from the vehicle and keep outside the range of the transmitter.
- Installation: Read out fault memory after connecting, adjust time display on combination instrument, code radio, normalize power window and activate steering angle sensor.
- Vehicles with stationary heater: adjust time display on stationary heater.
- Ensure that ground cable will not come into renewed contact with the battery terminal as you are working.

CAUTION:
- See instructions for performing repair, body work and welding on vehicles with airbags and ETR units

3 Remove airbag unit on steering wheel
4 Position steering wheel horizontal (front wheels in straight-ahead position)
5 Remove cage (1)

NOTE: Installation: Ensure that no cables are trapped.

6 Unplug steering wheel gear shift connector (2)
7 Unscrew countersunk bolt (32c) while steadying steering wheel (32)

NOTE: Installation: Install new countersunk bolt

8 Remove steering wheel

NOTE:
- Installation: The front wheels must be in the straight-ahead position. Fit steering wheel horizontally onto steering shaft. The recesses in the splines (arrows) run vertically.
- Disregard any markings on the top of the steering shaft

9 Check fanfare horns and airbag clock spring contact (A45) for damage
- Visual check, renew clock spring contact if necessary remove/install clock spring contact.

10 Install in the reverse order
11 Activate steering angle sensor
12 Deactivate service mode in TELE AID emergency call system
13 Read fault memory and erase
14 Conduct a road test

- Flasher canceling:

NOTE: When the steering wheel is offset by more than 1 tooth, satisfactory resetting of the turn signal is no longer guaranteed.

- Airbag indicator lamp:

NOTE: The SRS malfunction indicator lamp must not light up with full steering angle in both directions.

- Steering wheel position:

NOTE: If the steering wheel is crooked, adjust it by max. 1 tooth. If the difference is greater, Check and adjust toe on front axle.

15 Render electrical system operational.

NOTE: Perform basic programming (normalize windows and sliding roof, etc.).
