Remove/Install Torsion Bar On Rear Axle
- except CODE (487a) Active body control (ABC)

DANGER:
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the four pillars of the hoist and position the four support plates at the hoist mounting points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

CAUTION: Replace self-locking nuts and bolts

1 Remove rear wheels.
2 Remove exhaust pipe at flange.
3 Detach brake cables from automatic cable adjusters on parking brake mechanism.
4 Unscrew bolts from center driveshaft bearing support.
5 Remove driveshaft from final-drive unit.
- The Handy coupling remains with the driveshaft.

6 Remove fitted sleeves from flexible disks.

NOTE: Tie up propeller shaft to one side.

7 Unscrew nut (81 e) for control rod (85) from level sensor on torsion bar link (81) of torsion bar (77).
8 Remove nuts (78b/78c) holding linkage rod (78) between torsion bar (77) and wheel carrier.
9 Unscrew bolts (72d) for suspension strut cover(72c)
10 Unscrew bolts (41b/41c) connecting strut (41) to track control arm (72).
11 Unscrew bolted connection (77e/77f) holding torsion bar (77) to rear axle carrier.
12 Use assembly attachment, pit hoist or floor jack to support final-drive unit.
13 Unscrew forward rear axle mounting bolts (71a).

CAUTION: Installation: recut thread on frame floor with tap

14 Carefully lower the rear axle until the torsion bar (77) is free.

CAUTION: When lowering the rear axle use caution to ensure that no electrical wiring, cables or brake lines are damaged.

15 Remove torsion bar (77) out the side.

CAUTION: The rubber mounts are molded onto the torsion bar (77). If they are damaged or worn, replace the torsion bar (77).

16 Unscrew nuts (81b) from torsion bar link (81) and remove retaining bracket (81a) together with torsion bar link (81).

CAUTION: Installation: The flat on the torsion bar intermediate lever (81) must align with the flat on the torsion bar (77)

17 Install in the reverse order.
