Multifunction Steering Wheel, Function
General information
The multifunction steering wheel serves for increasing the active driving safety in road traffic in combination with the instrument cluster.
This means the driver can concentrate on the traffic without being distracted for controlling and operating various vehicle components (for example: radio, telephone)
The multifunction steering wheel allows the driver to control and check the following systems (depending on equipment) without removing the hands from the steering wheel:
- Audio
- Navigation
- Distronic
- Error and warning messages
- Settings (combined, lighting, vehicle, heating, convenience)
- Trip computer
- Telematics/Tele Aid (USA)
- Telephone
The main system selected by the user is shown in the multifunction displays of the instrument cluster.
Moreover, it is possible to actuate the fanfares via with the impact plate of the steering wheel.
Keypad
The associated systems can be selected via the system selection pushbutton (S110s3). It is possible to "scroll" forward and backward in the systems.
It is possible to "scroll" in a system with the scroll forward/back pushbutton (S110s1), i.e. additional submenus can be selected.
With the buttons:
- Telephone call accept and end (S111s3) enables a call to be accepted (answer) or terminated (hang up).
- + and -, - for setting specific functions and volume control (S111s1) the volume of the system momentarily active can be changed. Moreover, for example, it is possible to increase (+) or reduce (-) the system settings for the shut-off delay for interior lighting with the + or - buttons.
The control signals are transmitted from the keypad at the steering wheel through the clock spring contact to the control module (N80) located in the steering column switch module. The signals are transmitted from the control module (N80) through the vehicle databus system (interior CAN) to the instrument cluster.
