Wiper System (WS), Function

for all wiper system functions:
- Circuit 15R ON
- Engine hood closed
- Front doors closed

Safety cut off
The following safety precautions have been taken in order to minimize the risk of damage:
- If the engine hood is opened at a speed of ≤ 5 km/h, the wiper function is shut off immediately. The wipers can operate again only after the engine hood has been closed.
- If the engine hood is opened at a speed of ≥ 8 km/h, the wiper function is not shut off until a speed of ≤ 5 km/h is reached. The wiper can only start again when the engine hood is locked again and/or the speed of ≥ 8 km/h is exceeded.
- When a front door is opened and the wipers are not in the end position when c. 15R is switched on, wiper startup is suppressed. The position of the combination switch (S4) is of no relevance in this connection.
- The interval wiping feature is suppressed at vehicle speeds of ≤ 5 km/h, when one of the front doors is open.

NOTE: As of 1.6.02 the wiper function is not released again until a gear has been detected or the vehicle speed increases to > 8 km/h.

The conditions ensure that the wipers will still operate when driving, even when the left ATA hood switch (S62) is defective or if wiring problems are present.

The left door contact switch (S17/3) and right door contact switch (S17/4) are read in by the rear SAM control module (N10/8), the left ATA hood switch (S62) by the passenger-side SAM control module (N10/11) and relayed to the driver-side SAM control module (N10/10) via the interior compartment CAN for safety shut off.

The speed signal travels via the passenger compartment CAN bus from the instrument cluster (A1) to the driver-side SAM control module (N10/10).

The windshield wiper system is operated with the combination switch (S4).

The following functions are possible:
- Touch wiping
A single wipe is performed. For this purpose press combination switch (S4) up to catch point!

- Intermittent wiping
Turn the combination switch (S4) to position 1!

- Wiping with slow speed
(stage 1, approx. 40 cycles/min.). Turn the combination switch (S4) to position 2!

- Wiping with fast speed
(stage 2, approx. 60 cycles/min.). Turn the combination switch (S4) to position 3!

- Washing
The windshield is wiped with additional water. Press combination switch (S4) down beyond catch point!
