GF82.85-P-2012RI Navigation Mode, Function
- with CODE (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer

Function requirements
^ Status "Circuit 30 ON"
^ The Cockpit Management and Data System (COMAND) is switched on, authorized and operating error-free
^ No fault on global positioning system (GPS) antenna system
^ Signals available from at least 3 GPS satellites
^ Current navigation data loaded

General
The navigation module is integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3). The navigation system includes these functions:
- Position finding
- Route planning, route calculation and destination-oriented navigation
- Visual driving instructions in form of pictograms
- Intersection zoo
- Acoustic driving recommendations
- Display of navigation maps

The location of the vehicle, as well as the direction and distance to the destination are determined with the aid of the navigation system after entering the following information:
- Country, except code (494) USA version, or State, with code (494) USA version
- Town name
- Street
- Intersection or house number (depending on availability of the data)
- Town centers
- ZIP code
- Points of interest (POI)
- Destination entry on map

After entering or calling a destination location, route calculation starts. The route between the current vehicle position and the destination is calculated. The following computer models can be selected:
- Avoid freeway
- Avoid ferries or vehicle shipments
- Avoid tunnels

Moreover, additional route options can be selected for vehicles, except code (494) USA version:
- Quickest route
- Shortest route
- Dynamic route
- Avoid toll road
- Avoid roads requiring toll stickers

The submenus "Location vicinity", "Vicinity of other locations" and "Search by name and number" are supported in the "Points of interest" menu. After entering or calling a destination location, route calculation starts.
POI categories are, e.g.:
- Junctions
- Highway service
- Airport
- Hotel or motel
- Hospital
- Parking lot
- Restaurant

Further partial functions are described in separate documents:
^ Position finding and destination-oriented navigation, function
^ Route guidance through voice output, function

Function sequence
The data entered for reaching the destination (navigation) is calculated via the navigation system integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
The route is calculated based on the options set. If observance of the options is not possible, then the options set are ignored for the sections in question and a message is displayed and signaled audibly. The configured criteria and options can be displayed and changed. After calculation, the route is displayed on the map on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and by arrow pictograms on the display in the instrument cluster (A1), moreover the acoustic information feature announces "Route calculated".

If the vehicle is no longer moving on the pre-calculated route, then the route is recalculated. If the recalculated values are plausible for the navigation system, then the modified route is displayed. The signals are output to the instrument cluster as follows:
- COMAND operating, display and controller unit
- Interior CAN
- Instrument cluster

Dynamic route guidance (on vehicles, except code (494) USA version
An alternative route is offered under dynamic route guidance if there is a traffic jam or a road block on the calculated route.

The system can be activated or deactivated or the destination and street can be entered using the following components:
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Control panels on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit
- Voice control

The signal course for the control signals of the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group is as follows
- Direct line
- Steering column tube module (N80)
- Interior CAN
- COMAND operating, display and controller unit

When entries are made via the control panels on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, the control signals are processed within the unit.
The voice input takes place via the hands-free system microphone (B25). The words spoken are converted into an electrical signal by the hands-free system microphone and routed to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit over a direct line.
