Component Identification:

The navigation system route guidance (based on CD data) is supported significantly by voice output:
^ Direction information
^ Name of street at which to turn

The voice data was originally stored as single word elements on the navigation CD-ROM. This data record is automatically sent from the CD-ROM to the navigation processor and stored.
The navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3n1) links these word segments to form complete instructions or information and generates corresponding AF signals. The AF signals generated in this manner are transmitted internally to the COMAND audio signal processing unit if required, amplified there and output on the vehicle loudspeakers.

When the vehicle is fitted with the sound system (code 810), the voice signals are transmitted digitally from COMAND audio signal processing via D2B to the sound amplifier (A2/13), amplified there and then output via the vehicle speakers (see block wiring diagram).

Manual language loading from CD-ROM
The COMAND system provides 7 different languages:
^ German
^ English
^ English (United States of America)
^ French
^ Italian
^ Dutch
^ Spanish

Several driving recommendations following in close succession are combined into a single voice output.

These can be selected using the "System settings" menu. The data for voice output are transferred from the CD-ROM to the navigation processor where they are stored in a non-volatile memory.

Loading a language requires several seconds and changes the voice output as well as the menu text on the display. Voice loading takes place again automatically after a power disconnection.

While a language is loaded by the CD-ROM, extreme vibrations (e. g. with poor road conditions) should be avoided. Otherwise the voice output might be broken up. If this happens the language must be reloaded.

Overlaying of voice output and audio source
If an audio source (e. g. CD, CC, radio) is active at the same time as voice output, both signal sources are overlaid.
The volume of the voice output can also change during a voice announcement. A definable difference (can be modified in "Settings" menu) is maintained between the volume of the current audio source and the voice output volume.

Example:
The volume is turned down during voice output. If the specified volume difference to the audio signal is not attained, COMAND then decreases the level of the audio signal until the specified volume difference is again attained.

After voice output has taken place, the volume of the audio signal is increased to match that of the voice output.
The volume of the voice output cannot be reduced to below a certain minimum level.

Voice output mute circuit
The navigation voice output can be muted during voice output by pressing the mute button (button marked with struck-out speaker). The muting only applies to the current voice output.

If an audio source (CD, radio, etc.) can be heard at the same time as a navigation voice output, the navigation voice output is muted the first time the mute button is pressed and the complete playback is muted the second time the mute button is pressed.
