Function
With VCS, it is possible to operate the car telephone or audio systems by voice without taking the hands from the steering wheel. Data transfer is accomplished analog/digital (CAN/D2B). Activation or deactivation is possible with the voice control system switch, which is signaled to the user in the case of activation acoustically by a beep and in the case of deactivation by voice output.
After activation, the radio in the vehicle is automatically muted. A noise reduction feature integrated into the system in addition to the radio muting is intended to further minimize the error recognition rate of the system for user voice input. This allows driving noises to be recognized by the system and suppressed.
Moreover, after activation of the VCS, voice recognition is activated.
It is then possible to control the systems by precisely defined voice commands via the hands-free system microphone. Voice input should be accomplished from the driver's side because the microphone is aligned with the driver's seat.
Voice output by the VCS is accomplished via the entire loudspeaker system.
After activation of the VCS, the volume for the VCS can be adjusted with the volume control for the radio (Audio 30) or COMAND or the keys (+/-) on the multifunction steering wheel.
Adjustment of the tone and volume with the VCS is not possible.
In addition to this manual volume setting, there is a noise-dependent volume control in three stages for VCS voice output. It depends on the magnitude of the ambient noise level in the vehicle and cannot be influenced by the user. The VCS also contains a priority control, i.e. if collisions occur in the control of individual components in the communication for audio system, functions started by the VCS are discontinued or skipped.
An example of this is:
The navigation system attempts voice output while the VCS is involved in a dialog with the user.
Since the voice output from the navigation system has the highest priority of all systems, the dialog with the VCS is interrupted by the system, the (navigation) voice output is accomplished and the system then returns to (VCS) dialog with the user.
