Instrument Cluster (IC), Operating instructions
This information covers the following points:
- Operating the multifunction displays
- Calling up display of different systems
- Browsing within a system
- Example: Displaying engine oil level
- Individual settings
- Changing settings
- Example: Changing temperature display from degree Celsius to degree Fahrenheit
- Recalling the factory settings
- Calling up stored fault and warning messages
- Acknowledging fault and warning messages in the left multifunction display (A1p13) and right multifunction display (A1p15)
- Adjusting the brightness of the illumination
Operating the left multifunction display (A1p13) and right multifunction display (A1p15)
When the instrument cluster (A1) is activated, e.g. by opening the driver's door, the main screen of the base system always appears in the left and right multifunction displays (A1p13 and A1p15) (the trip and total mileage in the left-hand display and the outside temperature in the right-hand display).
Calling up display of different systems
Function requirement:
Terminal 15R: ON
By pressing the system select pushbutton (S110s3) on the multifunction steering wheel, the left multifunction display (A1p13) and right multifunction display (A1p15) are switched to the main screen of the next system. (The duration of actuation is of no importance.)
The display jumps on one system each time the button is pressed. After running through all the systems, the display returns to the main screen of the base function and then begins running through the systems again from the beginning.
The accompanying illustration shows the possible systems arranged in a circle. When the system select pushbutton (S110s3) is pressed, the display jumps in the direction of the arrow to the next system.
The direction depends on which segment of the button is pressed.
NOTE:
- Only systems and functions with which the vehicle is equipped are displayed.
- If a system is not present, it is skipped when the system select pushbutton (S110s3) is pressed.
Browsing within a system
Function requirements:
Terminal 15R: ON
In addition to the main screen, most systems also feature other screens.
The scroll forward/back pushbutton (S110s1) is used for browsing within a system.
The function of the scroll forward/back pushbutton is shown in the illustration taking the basic system as an example. Each time the scroll forward/back pushbutton (S110s1) is pressed, the display jumps to the next page.
The direction of browsing depends on which segment of the button (up arrow, down arrow) is pressed.
NOTE:
- The driver can jump to another system from any screen by pressing the system select pushbutton (S110s3).
- With the exception of the trip computer, the main screen of the relevant system now appears.
- When changing from the previous system to the trip computer system, the display always shows the most recently displayed screen in the trip computer system.
Example: Displaying engine oil level (ignition switched on):
- Press the system select pushbutton (S110s3) repeatedly until the base function (trip and total mileage) is displayed.
- Press either:
- The scroll forward (up arrow) button three times, or four times in vehicles with the optional tire pressure monitor, or
- The scroll back (down arrow) button once
Individual settings
Function requirements:
- Terminal 15R: ON
Using the function "Settings ..." the driver has the possibility of making various default settings.
Procedure:
1. Press the system select pushbutton (S110s3) repeatedly until the "Settings..." function appears in the left multifunction display (A1p13).

Performing a reset:
- Press the system select pushbutton (S110s3) repeatedly until the "SETTINGS ..." function appears in the left multifunction display (A1p13).
- Actuate the instrument illumination dimmer and reset button (A1r1) for at least 3 s.
The right multifunction display (A1p15) shows the message:" RESET SETTINGS, CONFIRM WITH RESET BUTTON"
- Actuate the instrument illumination dimmer and reset button (A1r1) a second time within 10 seconds to reset all the settings to the default factory settings. The right multifunction display (A1p15) shows the message: "RESET TO DEFAULT SETTINGS"
- If the instrument illumination dimmer and reset button (A1r1) is not actuated within this 10-second period, the display switches back to the main screen. The settings are not then reset.
NOTE: When resetting while the vehicle is moving, the "Headlamp switching" settings menu in the "Lights" menu and the "Speed limit (winter tires)" settings menu in the "Vehicle" menu are not reset for safety reasons. The following message appears: "NOT ALL SETTINGS RESET TO DEFAULTS WHILE DRIVING"
Calling up stored fault and warning messages
When the instrument cluster (A1) is active, the driver can scroll through the stored messages:
- Press the system select pushbutton (S110s3) repeatedly until the "FAULTS" display appears in the left multifunction display (A1p13).
- Use the + and - button for setting of specific functions and volume control (S111s1) to scroll through the fault messages. The messages are displayed in the order in which they were acknowledged.
Acknowledging fault and warning messages in the left multifunction display (A1p13) and right multifunction display (A1p15)
The messages are divided into three categories according to their priority.
Messages of categories 2 and 3 in the left multifunction display (A1p13) can be acknowledged by pressing the instrument illumination dimmer and reset button (A1r1), and with the system select button (S110s3) on the multifunction steering wheel, and are then stored in the fault memory. Messages belonging to category 1 (highest priority) cannot be acknowledged. Fault or warning lamps that light up in parallel cannot be acknowledged.
NOTE:
- Certain fault and warning messages are also accompanied by a chime.
- A chime always sounds with red fault and warning messages.
Fault and warning messages such as:
"CLOSE TRUNK LID" are not stored in the fault memory.
Adjusting the brightness of the illumination
The brightness of illumination of the instrument cluster (A1) and the switch and controls illumination can be adapted to individual requirements with the instrument illumination dimmer and reset button (A1r1):
- Clockwise rotation of the regulator increases the brightness; counterclockwise rotation decreases the brightness.
