Headlamp Actuation, Function

Headlamp Actuation, Function

The headlamp actuation encompasses the low and high beams lights.

The headlamp can be actuated
- manually with the exterior light switch and
- automatically (sensor controlled) or engine-dependent (daytime running light).

Automatic headlamp actuation
The automatic headlamp actuation is activated by
- when the light switch is set to "Auto"

Basic prerequisites for automatic headlamp actuation are:
- diminishing daylight intensity during dusk,
- darkness,
- rain or snowfall (rain sensor), and
- malfunction in the sensing device's light switch-on capability.

Fog and secondary light influences, e.g. through oncoming traffic, road lighting or through light reflections, do not lead to automatic headlamp actuation.

NOTE:
- Automatic headlamp actuation when starting a trip or while driving
- Automatic headlamp actuation is only possible when the engine is running (terminal 61 ON).
- When the engine is at a standstill and the electronic starter switch is in position "1" (terminal 15R ON) or "2" (terminal 15 ON) only the standing lamp is actuated.
- Automatic headlamp actuation is canceled as soon as one of the basic requirements alters. E. g. in the event of a change from darkness to daylight upon exiting a tunnel.

- Automatic headlamp actuation at the end of a Journey or in darkness
- After switching off the engine (terminal 61 OFF) and when the electronic starter switch is in position "2" (terminal 15 ON), "1" (terminal 15R ON) or "0" (terminal 15C) the standing lamp remains on.
- The standing lamp does not go off until the ignition key is removed.

Daytime running lamps
The daytime running light, the forced headlamp actuation every time the engine is started (terminal 61 ON), is subject to statutory regulations for the following country-specific vehicle versions (DK) (FIN) (IS) (N) (S) (CDN) and is preset in the instrument cluster and thus cannot be deactivated.

For all other vehicle national versions the daylight running lights can be activated and deactivated in the instrument cluster using the multifunction pushbuttons on the steering wheel.

NOTE: Switching off the daytime running light
- The daytime running light function is deactivated
- by switching off the engine (terminal 61 OFF)
or
- by manually switching on the headlamp using the exterior lamp switch (switching on lights manually)

High-beams actuation
The high beams lights can be switched on as steady light with the combination switch only when the low beams lights are on.

NOTE: If the combination switch is already in the "High-beams ON" position before the low-beams lights are switched on, then the high-beams lights are actuated
- during the journey immediately by switching on the headlamps and
- when the engine is at a standstill and the exterior lamp switch is in position "Low beams ON" from position "1" onwards (terminal 15R ON) on the electronic ignition switch

High-beams light control using the headlamp flasher is independent of the low beams function.
