Component Identification:
The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit allows portable CTELs (N123/1) from different manufacturers (e.g. Siemens, Motorola, Nokia) to be operated in the vehicle. It is only necessary to install the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface) (A34/15) required for the respective portable CTEL on the Universal Portable CTEL Interface contact plate.
Telephone operation
The telephone system can be operated as follows:
^ Directly at the radio and navigation unit (A2/56)
^ Using the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) in combination with the multifunction display of the instrument cluster (A1)
^ Over the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (with code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS]))
Information can be displayed via the
^ Portable CTEL display
^ Multifunction display of instrument cluster (A1)
^ Display of the radio and navigation unit (A2/56)
The volume can be adjusted separately for the telephone mode.
After the request via the radio and navigation unit (A2/56), the cell phone signals are transmitted and received via the telephone antenna (A2/22 or A2/49a1). The signals are transmitted over the E-net compensator (A28/3) to the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1). The E-net compensator (A28/3) compensates for losses caused by the higher transmission frequency of the E-net by means of amplification.
The telephone is illustrated by a symbol, if it is operational, in the display of the radio and navigation unit (A2/56). The reception field strength of the telephone is also displayed when the user places the telephone in the UHI portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface) (A34/15).
All control signals and useful signals (e.g. sound signals with hands-free system activated) are transmitted via the media-oriented system transport (MOST).
The rechargeable battery of the portable CTEL is charged over the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1). The rechargeable battery is charged automatically as soon as the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1) is activated, irrespective of whether the portable CTEL is switched on or off.
The radio and navigation unit (A2/56) features the following telephone functions:
^ Automatic disabling of telephone card when the personal identification number (PIN) is entered incorrectly 3 times
^ Direct dialing of the telephone number via the numerical keypad, display of the name of the person called (if the number entered is known)
^ Speed-dialing of the first 10 memory locations by pressing one key only or dialing all other memory locations by entering the 3-digit memory location number
^ Display of caller's number (if number transmitted)
^ Display of name (where telephone number is known)
^ Read text messages
^ Edit telephone book
^ Edit note book
^ Select from memory list using
- Memory location numbers
- Names (alphabetic)
- List of last 10 numbers dialed
Hands-free mode
During a phone call, the user can hold the conversation using the hands-free system. For this purpose, the hands-free system microphone group (A67b1) is located in the mirror housing of the inside rearview mirror unit. From there the microphone signals are forwarded directly to the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1), digitized, and sent over the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the radio and navigation unit (A2/56).
The signals are conditioned again in the radio and navigation unit (A2/56) and output via the vehicle speakers. Hand-free conversations are controlled by pushing the buttons on the operating unit of the radio and navigation unit (A2/56). During a hands-free telephone call the audio source is automatically muted. Operation is possible using the portable CTEL, the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) or the radio and navigation unit (A2/56).
Because of legal restrictions prohibiting the use of a telephone without a hands-free system while driving, it is not possible to telephone hands-free when the portable CTEL is removed from the UPCI (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) holder (A34/15).
Writing and editing text messages
In the basic service menu the "Mail" button leads to the creation, dispatch and administration of text messages (short message service - SMS).
The following possibilities exist:
^ Call up inbox
^ Call up outbox
^ Call up drafts box
^ Create new messages
^ Select mail settings
The user can enter characters using the predictive speller of the portable CTEL or using the keyboard of the radio and navigation unit (A2/56). These functions are also used for sending SMS messages; a receiver can be specified or dialed from the telephone book.
Data safety, SMS memory
If the battery voltage drops below 9.5 V, the characters in the memory of the radio and navigation unit (A2/56) are saved. However, it is possible for up to 4 characters to be lost. When switched off in a normal manner, no characters are lost.
