Remove/Install Spring Link On Front Axle
- except CODE (Z07) Top Protection
- except CODE (979) Special protection version
Remove/Install
DANGER:
- Risk of death. Death may result if vehicle slips or topples from the lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer
CAUTION: See Replace self-locking nuts and bolts
1 Raise vehicle
2 Remove front road wheel
3 Remove torque strut
NOTE: Do not detach torque strut from front axle earner
4 Unscrew nut (23c) and detach link rod (23) from spring link (17)
- Vehicles with code 489a (AIRMATIC)
NOTE: Installation: Press link rod (23) onto hexagon of ball joint in spring link (17).
- Inspect boot of ball joint for torsion bar link rod in spring link (17) for damage, replace spring link (17) as indicated.
5 Unscrew bolts (40c) from suspension strut (40)
NOTE: Installation: After bolt (40c) has been fully tightened, it must be flush with the suspension strut (40) or slightly recessed
6 Release suspension strut (40) from ball joint using a suitable lever
- Inspect ball joint bellows for damage, replace spring link (17) as indicated
7 Press spring link (17) out of steering knuckle
8 Detach right pressure supply valve unit from front-axle carrier and tie to one side.
- Vehicles with code 487a Active Body Control (ABC), when removing right spring link.
9 Remove spring link (17) from front axle carrier.
CAUTION: Do not turn the bolt (17a). When loosening the nut (17c), the bolt (17a) must be counterheld, as the fixing lugs for camber adjustment in the rubber mount are otherwise sheared off.
- Inspect rubber mount in spring link (17) for damage, replace spring link (17) as indicated.
NOTE: Installation: Screw the nut (17c) onto the bolt (17a) until it makes contact, but refrain from tightening it to allow the rubber mount of the transverse control arm to twist during spring compression. Tighten nut (17c) only once the vehicle is ready to drive.
Inspect
10 Check bellows on ball joints.
- If necessary. Install new spring link (17) as indicated.
11 Check rubber mount of spring link
- Install new rubber mount if necessary.
12 Install in the reverse order
13 Perform chassis alignment check
- After installation of new parts.
