Steering Shaft Coupler: Service and Repair

AR46.10-P-8000P Remove/Install Steering Coupling

DANGER:
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the hydraulic hoist and position the four support plates below the hoist support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

1 Move or push adjustable steering column all the way out

NOTE: Necessary for separation of steering coupling (25).

2 Switch off easy entry function for driver's seat and steering wheel
- Vehicles with memory.

CAUTION:
- Otherwise the driver's seat and steering wheel move to a different position, e.g. when the driver's door is opened or closed.
- Damage to the upper frame can occur when the holding device is installed.

NOTE:
It is switched off using the buttons on the steering wheel in the "Comfort" menu on the multifunction display, see vehicle owner's manual.

3 Turn steering wheel to center position (front wheels in straight-ahead position) and secure with holding device

CAUTION: The steering wheel must not be turned with the steering coupling (25) detached otherwise the contact spiral will be destroyed

4.1 Remove lower engine compartment paneling
- Vehicles with gasoline engine

4.2 Remove bottom section of sound-proofing capsule
- Vehicles with diesel engines

5 Dismount exhaust shield on firewall below steering coupling (25)
6 Unscrew bolt of steering coupling to steering shaft (25a)
7 Pull lower steering shaft (80a) up and out of steering coupling (25)

CAUTION: Do not use force (hammer blows, excessive leverage, strong lever action), because the lower steering shaft is sensitive to lateral dynamic effect and can be damaged.

NOTE: Installation: Insert lower steering shaft (80a) as far as the stop into the steering coupling (25), at the same time observe pivot of steering coupling (25) and groove of lower steering shaft (80a) (arrows).

8 Unscrew nut with bolt steering coupling to rack-and-pinion steering (25b)

CAUTION: Installation: Replace self-locking nut.

9 Carefully pull steering coupling (25) out of control valve of rack-and-pinion steering (23) (predetermined breaking point on control valve).

CAUTION: Do not use force (hammer blows, excessive leverages), in order to avoid damage.

NOTE:
- If required, enlarge clamping groove slightly with screwdriver.
- Installation: the rack-and-pinion steering is positioned incorrectly, it must be centered again.

10 Detach locking plate (25f) from steering coupling (25)

NOTE: For this step lift lug with a suitable tool.

CAUTION: Installation: Replace locking plate with self-locking nut. Push locking plate up sufficiently until the lug engages in the steering coupling.

11 Install in the reverse order
