- with CODE (498) Japan version
In vehicles for the Japanese market the so-called Personal Digital Cellular (PDC) cellular radio system standard is used. The handset transmitter and receiver connector (X39/5) is installed in the vehicle's driver information system. In order to use the cellular telephone system function, the user must insert a portable CTEL (A34/6) that is compatible with the Japanese cellular telephone system into the preinstalled handset transmitter and receiver connector (X39/5). A serial data line is used for the exchange of control and data signals between the portable CTEL (A34/6) and the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3). The handset transmitter and receiver connector (X39/5) is installed in the telephone compartment of the center console underneath the armrest.
The portable CTEL (A34/6) must be inserted in the handset transmitter and receiver connector (X39/5) before the user can make or receive a telephone call.
Telephone numbers can be displayed and selected using the portable CTEL (A34/6) or the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3), which also stores the phone directories and all service and e-mail data. Besides the telephone features, the functions of "Internet" (with e-mail), "24h service" and "i-mode" (option) are also available. The "i-mode" function is mobile Internet technology. The functions are displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1), in the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) and in the display of the portable CTEL (A34/6).
The driver cannot use the portable CTEL (A34/6) in the private mode to make or receive calls. The Internet function and service functions are only available when the vehicle is stationary and the parking brake is applied.
The following telephone functions are available with the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3):

Voice control system function (for code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS]))
The voice control system is intended to relieve the user during a journey through intuitive operation of the functions and provide him/her with a series of functions, without diverting his/her attention from the traffic. The user can control this function using the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3). The voice control is activated using the VCS [SBS] switch (S93/2). A signal, generated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3), sounds when the voice control system is operational. The system supports the Japanese language only.
The following components can be controlled via the voice control system (VCS):
^ Telephone components
^ Audio and video components
^ Navigation components
^ Help function (with commands displayed on COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3))
On Japanese portable CTELs (A34/6), the number, name and a phonetic transcription of the name are stored in the telephone book. If the phone directory is transferred to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3), all the directory entries are available immediately, also for the voice control system.
If problems occur with the command input by the user, the system responds with a corresponding command. This command is generated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) and output via the audio gateway control unit (N93/1) and vehicle speakers.
