Body - Tension Cable Detached From Convertible Top

Tension Cable Detached from Soft Top Canvas

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles where the tension cable seam has become detached at the canvas (Figure 1), follow the procedure below to resolve.







1. Remove rear window. Refer to WIS document AR67.20-P-5145QA.

2. Expose soft top at C-pillar (Figure 2) by removing rivet (Figure 3, 10).












3. Remove bolt (Figure 4, 11) from retaining rail.

4. Fold plastic rail of soft top canvas forward (Figure 5, 12).







5. Remove bolt (Figure 5, 13).

6. Remove rivet (Figure 6, arrow).







NOTE: During Installation of rivet, guide the strap of the soft top canvas together with the narrow strap around the soft top bow and rivet to water pocket together with the wide strap (Figure 7). Observe strap sequence: Soft top canvas strap (Figure 7, 4) narrow strap of water pocket (Figure 7, 5) wide strap of water pocket (Figure 7, 6).







7. Unclip guide (Figure 8, 39) with tension cable (Figure 8, 38).







NOTE: During Installation of cable, Guide the tension cable (Figure 8, 38) through the water pocket. Thread together guide (Figure 8, 39) and lock into position in the soft top bow.

8. Repair/bond fold seam
a. Use adhesive tape to mask off area that is not to be bonded (Figure 9)







b. Mix adhesive from repair kit. To do so, remove black plastic slide (Figure 10)







c. Spread adhesive on surfaces to be bonded (Figure 11)







NOTE: Allow a flash-off time of five minutes.

d. Clamp adhesive seam using spring clamps & straight edge (Figure 12)







NOTE: After bonding, the adhesive seam must harden for at least 5 hours.

9. Reassemble soft top C- Pillar.

10. Install rear window.

NOTE: If this condition occurs, the soft top canvas must be repaired by bonding the fold seam. Do not replace the soft top canvas if the fold seam has become detached.
