GF82.10-P-0003Q Exterior lights, function

The exterior lights comprises the following components:
^ Front lamp units
^ Front fog lamps
^ Taillamps
^ License plate lamps
^ Center high-mounted stop lamp
^ Turn signal lamps
^ Side marker lamps (only United States of America)

These are no longer actuated directly via their controls. The switch positions for the controls are initially read in by the assigned control units and sent as a Controller Area Network (data bus/ CAN-Bus) (CAN) message to the Controller Area Network bus Class B (interior) (CAN-B).

Assignment of controls and control units:
^ Light switch module (S1) -front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1)
^ Combination switch (S4) -steering column module (N80)
^ Hazard warning system switch (N72/1s5) -upper control panel control unit (N72/1)
^ Backup lamp switch (S16/2) -front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) (transmission 716)

Transmission 722.6
The backup lamp signal of the electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5) is sent as a CAN message to the Controller Area Network bus Class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C) and then relayed via the EIS [EZS] control unit (N73) to the CAN-B.

The various switch positions for the exterior lights are received and evaluated via the CAN-B. The corresponding lamps are actuated via the following control units:
^ Front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1)
^ Rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2)
^ Left door control unit (N69/1)
^ Right door control unit (N69/2)

An exception to this is the actuation of the stop lamps, as these are actuated via the CAN-B and additionally via a discrete line. The discrete line prevents any delay when switching on the stop lamps and ensures that the stop lamps still function in the event of a line interruption.
