In the event of a side impact the left side airbag sensor (A53) and right side airbag sensor (A54) detect the accelerations and decelerations acting on the vehicle in the transverse direction. A plausibility check of the values is carried out in the restraint systems control unit (N2/7).

If plausible, a deployment signal is sent to the affected side airbags.
