The StarGuide system exploits the availability of existing telecommunication technology in the USA. This is used to provide a personal information service.
Technical prerequisites:
^ COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3)
^ Latest navigation digital versatile disk (DVD) (comprises the current software for performing the services offered in each case)
^ the requirements for using the systems concerned have been met.
Organizational prerequisites:
^ GPS: Global Positioning System. The GPS is available for precise localizing and navigation. Currently the system is operating with several operational satellites which are moving in various orbits around the earth.
^ AMPS: Advanced Mobile Phone System. Meanwhile the AMPS network is available to 98% of the population in the densely populated areas of the USA.
^ SOC: Service Operating Center. The SOC receives all the driver's individual requirements and conveys the corresponding information to the vehicle.
Personal information service concept:
^ Individual information and news depending on your personal interests (stock exchange, weather, sport etc.).
^ Transmit a request via a button to the so-called Service Operating Center (SOC) of the respective service provider.
^ The SOC transmits selected information and news depending on the customer profile.
^ The data conveyed are shown in the display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) and can then be read.
