Component Identification:

The telephone system can be operated as follows:
^ At the COMAND operating, display and control unit
^ With the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) in combination with the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster
^ Over voice commands using the voice control system (VCS [SBS])

The audio source is automatically muted during a telephone call. The telephone mode is described in greater detail below. The telephone radio signals are transmitted and received via the telephone antenna (A2/49a1) integrated in the telephone and GPS roof antenna. The display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit shows the destination field strengths in 5 grades when the telephone is in its ready status. All control signals and useful signals (e.g. sound signals with hands-free system activated) are transmitted via the media-oriented system transport (MOST). To this end, the portable CTEL (A34/6) requires an interface to the MOST, which is implemented by the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1).

The COMAND operating, display and control unit has the following telephone functions:
^ Automatic disabling of telephone card when the personal identification number (PIN) is entered incorrectly 3 times.
^ An emergency call can still be made without any PIN number or when the telephone card is not inserted.
^ Direct dialing of the telephone number using the rotary switch or number pad, display of name of party being called (if number entered is known).
^ Speed dial: The first 10 memory locations can be dialed by pressing one key only; all other memory locations can be dialed by entering the 3-digit memory location number
^ Selection from memory lists sorted according to:
- memory location numbers
- names (alphabetic)
- list of previous 10 dialed numbers

^ Display of the telephone number during an incoming call (in the event that the number is also transmitted by radio signal), display of the caller's name (in event that number is known).

Telephone variants
The COMAND operating, display and control unit comes with the following variants for telephone mode:
^ Telephone "Handy", UPCI system (with Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit, UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface) (A34/15) and portable CTEL)

The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit is made by the same manufacturer as the portable CTEL. It establishes the physical connection between the cellular phone and the MOST bus, and converts the protocol as described in the specification.

Receive and send SMS messages
A modem is integrated into the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit, which transmits and receives SMS messages. The creation and editing of an SMS however is only possible if SMS messages are available in the buffer and it is done using the keyboard of the COMAND operating, display and control unit. When the power supply fails, the characters stored in the buffer are saved.

This serves to backup the saved data. However, it is possible for up to 4 characters to be lost. When switched off in a controlled manner, no characters are lost. Characters are entered using the input aid (Speller) or on the keyboard of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (as for portable CTEL). These functions are also used for sending SMS messages; a recipient can be entered or selected from the telephone book.

Switch-on again after controlled and uncontrolled switch-off
After switching back on, the basic telephone display appears. By selecting menu point "SMS" the main SMS menu can be displayed. In the SMS main menu, the user can select the "Edit SMS" submenu and continue the editing process using the input aid (Speller).

The telephone notebook is always available.

Send and receive e-mails
The sending and receiving of messages in e-mail format is done via the modem in the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit. E-mails are also created (as for SMS) on the keyboard of the COMAND operating, display and control unit.

Transmit emergency call
An emergency call is automatically sent in the event of an accident, whereby the severity of the accident is irrelevant. The emergency call system control unit (N123/4) receives the accident data from the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) and also via the Diagnosis Controller Area Network (data bus/CAN bus) (CAN).

A manual emergency call is initiated by pressing the MB-Info and breakdown assistance button group (S93/6). It is integrated into the overhead control panel control unit (N70). The MB-Info and breakdown assistance button group is connected discretely to the emergency call system control unit.
