GF82.61-P-2005TX Route Guidance By Voice Output
- with CODE (527) COMAND APS (with navigation)

"Dynamic route guidance", function
The current traffic situation is taken into consideration in the dynamic route guidance. The navigation processor (N41/1) can receive information on the traffic situation either by the Traffic Center Service (TCS) or the Traffic Message Channel (TMC).

The services from the TCS are offered by an external provider and an application is to be sent to the provider for use.

Traffic messages via TCS
The information on the current traffic situation is transmitted as an SMS message (short message service) via the telephone network by the service provider and is subject to fees. With the TCS data exchange it is possible to make a call.

The traffic data recorder integrated in the audio gateway control unit (N93/1) will only transmit traffic data to the navigation processor (N41/1), if it receives traffic data from a service provider. To do this, the service provider has to receive the corresponding request from the vehicle.

The request is given either cyclically every 15 min or one time. In order to reduce the data volume, the current location of the vehicle is automatically sent to the network provider center when the information request is posted. The service provider then transmits only traffic messages at within a radius of approx. 75 km around the vehicle.

Traffic messages via TMC
Information on the current traffic situation is broadcast via ultra- short wave (FM) free of charge by specially equipped regional radio stations. A suitable FM/RDS transmitter must be tuned in. A tuner in the audio gateway control unit (N93/1) operates as a radio tuner, the second tuner in the audio gateway control unit (N93/1) receives the traffic messages via the left antenna amplifier module (A2/64) and forwards them to the traffic data recorder. Since no communication is accomplished between the vehicle and broadcasting corporation with TMC messages, the traffic data recorder selects the traffic messages related to the route on which the vehicle is presently driving as well as the surrounding area.

If the TMC transmission signal is weak, the system searches for an alternative station via station search in the background.

Traffic information analysis
In both cases (TCS or TMC) the traffic data recorder decodes the traffic information and forwards it to the navigation processor (N41/1) when requested. The navigation processor (N41/1) makes the decision whether the route should be changed. If necessary, a message that the route should be changed is output via the vehicle speaker.
The traffic data recorder requires an up-to-date "location list" from the navigation processor (N41/1) for synchronization purposes. Each stretch of road and each striking feature (e.g. expressway exit) of the road network detected is clearly defined by means of a number. The "location list" is stored on the digital versatile disk (DVD). If required (e.g. changing the DVD) it is automatically loaded into the traffic data recorder. The traffic information stored in the traffic data recorder are automatically deleted after t = 30 min. A maximum of 100 messages can be stored.
The decoded traffic messages are marked on the map using suitable symbols. They can also be displayed as clear text. To do this, press the "TRAFFIC JAM" button

Traffic reports relevant to the route are, for example:
^ Completely blocked
^ Traffic jam
^ Stop and go traffic
^ Construction sites

The mode (TMC or TCS) can be selected in the menu "navigation, settings, traffic information". A mixed operation of TMC and TCS is not possible.

The traffic jam information is displayed on and next to the route on the map during navigation.

"Voice output", function
The navigation of the navigation system (based on DVD data) is basically supported by voice outputs using the following notes:
^ Direction information
^ Name of the road to turn into

The voice data is originally stored on the navigation DVD as individual word segments. This data record is automatically transmitted from the DVD into the navigation processor (N41/1) and stored there. The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has the following languages:
^ German
^ British English
^ American English
^ French
^ Spanish
^ Italian
^ Dutch

Several driving recommendations in quick succession are combined into a single voice output.

The navigation processor (N41/1) links the word segments into complete instructions or information and produces the corresponding low frequency (audio frequency) signals.

If required, the audio frequency signals thus generated are forwarded via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) or the audio gateway control unit (N93/1), are amplified there and then output via the vehicle speakers. These can be selected using the "System settings" menu.

Loading a language takes some seconds and changes both the voice output and the menu texts in the display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). Voice loading takes place again automatically after a power disconnection.

While a language is being loaded from the navigation DVD, avoid heavy vibration. Otherwise the voice output might be broken up. In such cases it is necessary to reload the language.

Superimposition of voice output and an audio source.
When voice output is active simultaneously with an audio source (e.g. CD, radio), the two signal sources are superimposed.

Volume of voice output
The voice output volume can be adjusted during voice output . A definable difference (can be modified in "Settings" menu) is maintained between the volume of the current audio source and the voice output volume .

Voice output mute circuit
The navigation voice output can be muted during voice output by pressing the mute button (button marked with struck-out speaker). The mute feature applies only for the current voice output. When navigation voice output and an audio source (e.g. CD, radio) are active simultaneously, the navigation voice output is switched to mute when the mute button is pressed for the first time and the complete playback is switched to mute when the mute button is pressed a second time.

Notes concerning voice output
Voice is output when the system issues recommendations for turning and when turning into numbered streets (highways, federal highways). A special note is issued via voice output in the following cases:
^ Destination in area where driving is not possible
^ Destination in area where driving is not always possible
^ Route via ferry
^ Route via toll road

There are additional voice outputs at the start of the route calculation, when an intermediate destination has been reached or if the destination has been reached and if the route is affected due to traffic messages.
