Radio mode, function
After the "radio mode" function has been activated by pressing the "FM/AM" button in the "Audio" menu displayed on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), the antennas in the rear window receive the high-frequency signals for ultra-short wave (FM), shortwave (SW), middle wave (MW) and long wave (LW) bands. The music, voice and data signals are superimposed on these high-frequency radio signals. The left antenna amplifier module (A2/64) and the right antenna amplifier module (A2/65) filter the frequencies of the radio frequency bands out of the high-frequency signals received and amplify them. The amplified signals are then transmitted via a coaxial line to the radio tuner, which is integrated in the audio gateway control unit (N93/1).
The radio tuner separates the useful information (audible frequencies) from the carrier signal (inaudible). The demodulated audio signals are amplified and converted to sound signals by the vehicle speakers.
Antenna diversity, function
With the "antenna diversity" function, a reception-dependent switchover occurs between the FM antennas in the rear window. This function runs automatically and is performed by the left antenna amplifier module (A2/64) and the right antenna amplifier module (A2/65). The radio tuner in the audio gateway control unit (N93/1) merely generates intermediate frequency (IF) signal, which serves the antenna amplifier as a reference for changing the FM antenna.
Two-tuner technology function
After the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has been switched on, a second (integral) radio tuner in the audio gateway control unit (N93/1) automatically generates a list of the received FM stations. This list is continuously updated while the unit is in operation. This list appears, sorted alphabetically, when the "FM station list" menu is called up. The stations which are displayed can be activated by selecting and confirming.
The station list is only available when the Radio Data System (RDS) function is activated. If reception problems occur while driving, the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) tries to receive the selected station on an alternative frequency with the aid of the second receiver and to switch over accordingly if the reception improves.
Certain radio channel programs are subdivided into regional programs at certain transmission times. Since the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), automatically switches to an alternative station frequency due to reception interference, this may also lead to a change in regional programming.
RDS function
In addition to their normal radio program, many radio stations (FM) transmit additional, inaudible digital information such as station names, program type (PTY) (e.g. pop, culture, etc.) and traffic radio recognition.
This information is evaluated by the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) and displayed on the screen if the following conditions are met:
^ An RDS station is adjusted
^ The RDS function is activated.
The radio component in the audio gateway control unit (N93/1) also provides the following features:
^ A station list of the currently most powerful FM stations in RDS mode
^ An automatic memory for the strongest AM stations
^ A selection of program type (e.g. culture, sport, pop) for FM transmissions in RDS mode
Station selection options:
^ automatic station search with scan function (the stations of one waveband are played for 8 s)
^ Station search at multifunction steering wheel (MFL)
^ Manual station search
^ Station selection with station list
^ Station selection by means of a key pad
^ Station selection by entering frequency (e.g. 92.2 MHz)
^ station selection from the memory (10 stations per waveband)
CD-mode function
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is equipped with an integrated digital versatile disk (DVD) ROM that supports video DVD and can be used for playing audio CDs.
CD changer operation mode (with code (819) 6-disk CD changer)
The CD changer (A2/6) is controlled by the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). The control signals and the audio data from the CD changer (A2/6) are transmitted through the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST), with the audio data being sent onto the audio gateway control unit (N93/1).
Only audio CDs with the appropriate file format can be used in the CD changer (A2/6).
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has the following functions in connection with the CD changer (A2/6):
^ "Scan" function
The tracks of a CD or the first track of each CD in the entire magazine are played for t = 8 seconds. After this has been run through completely, the scan function is automatically terminated.
^ "Random" function
All the titles on a CD or the entire CD magazine are played in accordance with the random principle.
^ "Repeat" function
Alternatively a title, a CD or the entire CD magazine is repeated.
^ Fast forward or reverse (music search)
The music played is audible during fast forward or reverse. Certain parts of a title can therefore be specifically played or skipped.
CD title allocation, function
Each CD contains a fixed table of contents (TOC entry). Based on this, the operating unit clearly detects the respective CD and can automatically designate this CD after a one-time track assignment by the user (even if the CD is subsequently loaded into another CD magazine).
The table of contents (TOC) entry contains additional information on the number of tracks on a CD and the CD's total playing time.
