On/Off characteristics
Navigation system activation
When the driver's door is open, the navigation system is activated automatically via the engine compartment CAN (CAN-C). This process lasts for approximately t = 2 s and may be accompanied by faintly audible noises from the DVD-ROM drive integrated in the navigation processor. The display of the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) remains switched off. If, as a result of this, no status change occurs at the electronic ignition switch control unit (N73) - "Circuit 15C or 15R ON" - the navigation processor remains activated for t = 30 min. This is followed by an automatic cutout.
With code (529) HIGH Class Japan the navigation processor is integrated in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).
Activation of entire system
Position 1
Inserting the transmitter key (A8/1) into the electronic ignition switch control unit (N73)
In the event of position "terminal 15C" only the bus systems are activated for t = 3 min in order to ensure a fast cutting-in process. If the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) is switched on using the ON button (ON/OFF), automatic cutout occurs after 30 minutes.
Position 2
By turning the transmitter key (A8/1) into position 1 ("terminal 15R ON"), the device is switched on, if it was switched on before the transmitter key (A8/1) was last removed.
It remains in operation until the transmitter key (A8/1) is removed again.
The function options are restricted to:
^ The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3)
^ Multifunction display (A1p13) in instrument cluster (A1)
^ Operation via the multifunction steering wheel
Position 3
By continuing to turn into position 2 ("circuit 15 ON") all vehicle functions are operational.
The system which was active before it was last switched off (e.g. radio) is switched on and the corresponding basic menu is displayed. If the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) was switched off for more than 30 minutes, a warning menu appears with general information on using the system.
Position 4
The engine is started by rotating the transmitter key (A8/1) into position 3 "circuit 50 ON". If a considerable voltage drop occurs while starting the engine, the system switches off for this duration but switches back on again once the on-board electrical system has stabilized.
Characteristics when ON/OFF button is pressed
The COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) can also be switched on by pressing the ON button (ON/OFF) when the transmitter key (A8/1) is removed. All MOST functions are then available for 30 minutes. The system switches off automatically once this time has elapsed. If the system has switched off after 30 minutes, the system can be switched on again by pressing the ON button. The cycle (30 minutes) then starts from the beginning.
On/Off characteristics via "AUTO-ON"
The COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) changes to the function status "AUTO-ON", when it is "woken up" by a MOST participant (e.g., telephone call). In this case, the function status, in which the system was found before the wake-up, is stored. After completing the functions initiated by the wake-up or user instructions the system status that prevailed before the wake-up signal arrived is restored. For the "AUTO-ON" function, COMAND neither accepts display requirements from other MOST participants, nor does it wake them.
Switching off is effected either via the ON button (ON/OFF) or by removing the transmitter key (A8/1).
An active phone call is not interrupted by removing the transmitter key (A8/1). In this case the MOST system switches off automatically.
Switch off characteristics
The COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) is switched off via the ON button or by removing the transmitter key (A8/1) - "Circuit 15C OFF" - via the electronic ignition switch control module (N73).
After shutting down the MOST ring, the 30-minute run-on time (standby mode) of the navigation system starts. During this period all the important locating parameters are stored.
Furthermore, the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) and audio gateway control unit (N93/1) are always in standby mode when the interior CAN (CAN-B) is active.
Switch off characteristics at undervoltage
The central computer of the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) constantly monitors battery voltage. Depending on the voltage value the system will act as follows:
Battery voltage is 9.5 to 11.5 V (battery warning range)
^ If the battery voltage drops below 11.5 V, a message appears in the display and requests that the engine be started.
^ If the engine is not started, then a further warning takes place after 3 minutes, that approx. 10 seconds still remain for starting the engine before the device switches off. In this case switching on the engine prevents the system from being automatically shut down. If the system has switched off and the voltage again rises to above 11.5 V, the COMAND system does not switch back on automatically.
^ If a system has been shut down it can be switched back on again manually. The warning procedure recurs each time anew until the fault has been rectified.
Battery voltage below 9.5 V (undervoltage)
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is automatically switched to a defined waiting state in which only the battery voltage is monitored. In addition to this the current operating status is stored. In this condition, the system cannot be operated or actuated by STAR DIAGNOSIS. Communication with external components does not take place.
