Navigation system
In the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) the location of the vehicle, the direction and distance to the destination (after destination input) are determined by the integrated navigation processor. Then the required measures for reaching the destination are started (navigation).
After the navigation system is activated even by opening the driver door (in the background), it is operational via the operating unit immediately after initialization.
A DVD disk drive for reading the digital map data is integrated in the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3). Once the NAV button is pressed an instruction appears to load the navigation DVD.

If an incorrect or illegible CD, e.g., audio CD, is inserted, an error message appears in the menu.

Destination entry
Entry of the destination can be accomplished menu-assisted via the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) and is processed by the navigation processor.
The COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) offers in navigation mode the following alternatives for destination entry:
^ Via destination memory
^ Destination entry
^ Special destinations (e.g. hospital, car park, gas station)
^ Last destination input
^ Entry of intermediate destinations
^ Dynamic route calculation
^ Address input
^ Destination with map
^ Travel guide
^ Destination memory with individual destinations

Predictive text input
When entering destination data, the next possible letters are displayed and it is then possible to adopt the relevant letter in the destination entry.

Dynamic supplementation
This function is realized with the manual entry of the destination. While entering a destination the letters which are still missing are completed from an existing list. The supplemented characters have a black background. Deleting can be accomplished character by character.
The following submenus are displayed in the "Special destinations" menu:
^ Location surroundings
^ Surroundings of current destination
^ Surroundings of any town center point
^ Surroundings of a special destination

These submenus are subdivided still further.
The search radius is approx. 20 km, however, special categories, i.e. airports, have a larger search radius (approx. 80 km).

Position finding
The COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) continually calculates the location of the vehicle with the aid of the following methods:
^ GPS location finding
^ Basic position finding (dead reckoning)
^ Map-supported location finding (map matching)
The integrated navigation processor calculates the most probable position by constantly comparing the location finding results of these three methods.

Route calculation
The route is calculated by the navigation processor in accordance with the specified destination, or automatically, after a deviation from the suggested route has taken place.

Dynamic navigation system

The dynamic navigation system is implemented with the VICS 3-media Box control unit that is available as a dealer option on the Japanese market .

With the dynamic navigation system, current traffic reports and traffic information are incorporated and also taken into account in the route calculation.
The calculated route is stored in the navigation processor. Navigation starts once the navigation processor has carried out the route calculation.
Three forms of destination-finding system display are available:
^ Map
^ Map and symbol illustration prior to turns
^ Symbol presentation (system of navigation symbols)

The map presentation is always controlled by the operating unit.

The following presentations are assisted:
^ Navigation map
^ Position map
^ Destination map
^ Route map
^ Auto zoom
^ Intersection zoom
^ Traffic jam map
^ Car park map

It is possible to change at will between the types of presentation . The destination-finding system is also supported by voice output from the vehicle loudspeakers.

When the DVD disk drive is not used for navigation, audio CDs or video DVDs can also be played.
