Removal and Replacement



AR46.10-P-0400T Remove/Install Jacket Tube

CAUTION: See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts

1 Fully extend or pull out adjustable steering column

NOTE: Necessary for separating the steering coupling (2) and lower steering shaft (3).

2 Position steering wheel horizontal (front wheels in straight-ahead position)
3 Disconnect ground cable of battery
4.1 Remove bottom part of noise encapsulation
- Vehicles with diesel engines

4.2 Remove engine compartment paneling
- Vehicles with gasoline engines

5 Unscrew bolts (1)
6 Pull lower steering shaft (3) upwards out of the steering coupling (2)

CAUTION:
- Do not use force (hammer blows, severe leverage) as the lower steering shaft (3) is sensitive to the effects of side force.
- When the steering coupling (2) is detached the steering wheel must not be twisted as the fanfare horns and airbag clock spring contact may be damaged.


NOTE:
- Installation: Turn rack-and-pinion steering to center position
- Push lower steering shaft (3) into steering coupling (2) as far as the stop, observing the pins of the steering coupling (2) and groove of the lower steering shaft (3).

7 Pull the locking plate (4) off the steering coupling (2), lifting the lug with a suitable tool.

NOTE: Installation: Replace locking plate (4) with self-locking nut Push up locking plate (4) until the lug engages in the steering coupling (2).

8 Remove steering wheel
9 Remove steering column switch module
10 Remove instrument cluster
11 Remove cover below instrument panel
12 Disconnect plug (6) from electric steering lock control module (N26/5)
13 Disconnect steering column adjustment connector (X4/39)
- Vehicles with memory package (driver's seat, steering column, mirrors) CODE (275a)

14 Swivel locking handle (7) forwards until this locks in position in the handle arm (8)
- Vehicles without memory package (driver's seat, steering column, mirrors) CODE (275a)

15 Press handle arm (8) downwards to separate it from the jacket tube (12)
- Vehicles without memory package (driver's seat, steering column, mirrors) CODE (275a)

16 Detach steering column adjustment (10) from crossmember below instrument panel; to do this, unscrew lower bolt (9) and upper bolts (11)

NOTE: Installation:
- Tighten bolts (9,11) finger-tight, it must still be possible to move the jacket tube (12).
- Tighten the upper bolts first (11).

17 Remove jacket tube (12) with lower steering shaft (3) upwards

CAUTION: Do not use force (hammer blows, severe leverage) as the lower steering shaft (3) is sensitive to the effects of side force.

NOTE: Ensure that the rubber sleeve remains in the firewall since the pedal assembly must be removed before the rubber sleeve can be reinstalled.

18 Grease rubber sleeve at front inside firewall near bearing seat
19 Install in the reverse order.
