GF82.85-P-0003RA Cockpit Management and Data System (COMAND), Function
GF82.85-P-0003RA Cockpit Management And Data System (COMAND), Function
- with CODE (352) COMAND operating and display system
- except CODE (491) USA version
- except CODE (498) Japan version
Component Identification:
The following systems can be controlled centrally with the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3):
^ Radio
^ Integrated CD drive for navigation and audio function
^ CD changer (optional)
^ BOSE sound system (optional)
^ Navigation with dynamic destination-oriented navigation system
^ Telephone (optional)
^ TV tuner and decoder supporting multiple standards (optional)
^ Voice control (optional)
^ TMC and TCS (dynamic destination-oriented navigation system in Germany)
The audio signals of a Walkman are transmitted to the COMAND via an AUX jack in the glove compartment.
Component Identification:
The COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) is the central component of the COMAND system. It has a 5" color LCD display with graphic and video capability. The operating menus, map data for navigation and the television picture are broadcast here. Operation takes place via function keys and two rotary encoders as well as menu-assisted on the display.
Some functions can be activated using the buttons at the multifunction steering wheel. It should be noted that all pushbutton operations on the multifunction steering wheel are first processed by the instrument cluster (A1). The instrument cluster (A1) links the incoming pushbutton operations with the current menu setting in the multifunction display and, where applicable, it then transmits a corresponding CAN message to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3).
Optional equipment:
^ Infrared remote control
^ CD changer (code 819a)
^ Voice control (code 813)
^ BOSE sound system (code 810)
^ TV tuner (code 860)
COMAND bus system
The digital components of COMAND are networked with one another by means of the digital data bus (D2B) and an electric wake-up signal. The data (control commands and useful information) is transmitted between the various system components via the digital data bus (D2B).
Different information systems are used to transmit the operating and display information and the audio signals (also see block diagram):
^ Digital data bus (D2B)
^ interior CAN.
^ CAN MCNet (micro controller net CAN)
Digital data bus (D2B)
Via the D2B, data is exchanged between the:
^ Sound amplifier (A2/13)
^ CD player with changer (in trunk) (A2/6)
^ Telephone system
^ Voice control system control unit (A35/11), depending on equipment installed
In the process, both control data and the actual audio signals are transmitted (music from CD changer, voice when on telephone).
interior CAN.
^ The data exchange with the instrument cluster (A1) is performed via the interior CAN. The instrument cluster (A1) thus receives the audio, telephone and navigation data from COMAND for the left multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1) as well as the time via this bus
CAN MCNet (micro controller net CAN)
^ The CAN MCNet, which is independent of the interior CAN, is used for the data exchange of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) with the optional TV tuner (A2/42) components
