GF82.61-P-4003RJ Dynamic Route Guidance, Function
- with CODE (498) Japan version

The current traffic situation is taken into consideration in the dynamic route guidance. The navigation processor in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) can receive the data with regard to the current traffic situation via an integrated F multiplex tuner in connection with an external Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS) 3 media box. The antenna signal is sent straight to the FM multiplex tuner of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) via a coaxial line, which then processes the data. Finally the information is shown on the map in the COMAND operating, display and control unit display (A40/3).

The VICS-3 media box for dynamic route guidance is a dealer option; the interface for connection however, is available ex-factory in the vehicle.

Without the external VICS -3 media box, the internal FM multiplex tuner is not suitable for dynamic route guidance.

FM multiplex function
Pressing the "FM multiplex" button enables the user to display all received and stored information (traffic messages, weather information etc.) as dynamic text on the display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). The desired information can be selected directly using the 12-key keypad on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).

The "FM multiplex" function is only available when the vehicle is at a standstill.

Traffic radio, function
Signs installed next to roads and freeways notify road users which regional radio stations (with a fixed broadcast frequency) broadcast traffic information and show the frequencies on which they can be received.
The driver can press the "Traffic Information (TI)" button on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) to listen to the local traffic information.

Traffic information is only broadcast regionally and not nationally. It is therefore difficult to create a complete and up-to-date list of traffic jams. Dynamic route guidance is therefore not always possible.

The traffic information stored in the traffic data recorder of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is automatically deleted after a period of t = 0.5 hrs.

The navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) decides whether or not the route should be changed. The decision is based above all on the route selection that has been entered.
The traffic data recorder requires an up-to-date "location list" from the navigation processor in order to correct the route. Each stretch of road and each striking point (e.g. expressway exit) of the stored road network is clearly defined by means of a number. The "location list" is originally stored on the navigation digital versatile disk (DVD).
The decoded traffic messages are marked on the map using suitable symbols. They can also be displayed as clear text. Traffic reports relevant to the route are, for example:
^ Road blocked
^ Jam
^ Slow-moving traffic
^ Road works
