^ Media interface function, with code (518) Media interface
Operating instructions
Audio functions can be selected, activated and adjusted with the following components:
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) or right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Control buttons on the COMAND controller unit
Radio mode function sequence (AM/FM)
The function sequence is subdivided into the following subfunctions:
^ Radio mode function sequence (AM/FM)
^ AM tuner function sequence (MW/LW/SW)
^ Function sequence for FM tuner with phase diversity (FM/VICS)
Radio mode function sequence (AM/FM)
The rear window antenna, the rear shelf antenna (A2/68), and the antennas in the windshield receive high frequency (HF) signals for the FM and AM radio frequency bands.
The following useful signals relevant for the radio reception are modulated onto these HF signals:
- Music signals
- Speech signals
- Data signals (e.g. traffic information)
The function sequence is subdivided into the following subsequences:
^ Signal course for FM reception
^ Signal course for AM reception
^ Signal course for audio output
Signal course for FM reception
The FM signals are transmitted to the COMAND controller unit via direct lines over the following path:
- Windshield antennas
- Left antenna amplifier module (A2/64) or right antenna amplifier module (A2/65)
Signal course for AM reception
The signal course depends on the soft top status, which is relayed by the Vario roof closed limit switch (pin on right) (S69/1) via a direct line to the rear shelf antenna amplifier (A2/67).
When the soft top is closed, the AM signals are forwarded to the COMAND controller unit over the following path:
- Rear window antenna
- Direct line
- Rear window antenna amplifier module (A2/12)
- Direct line
- Rear shelf antenna amplifier
- Direct line
- Left antenna amplifier module
- Direct line
When the soft top is open, the AM signals are forwarded to the COMAND controller unit over the following path:
- Rear shelf antenna
- Direct line
- Rear shelf antenna amplifier
- Direct line
- Left antenna amplifier module
- Direct line
The antenna amplifiers filter the frequencies of the radio frequency bands out of the received HF signals and amplify them. The amplified signals are demodulated in the COMAND controller unit in the integrated tuners.
Signal course for audio output
The demodulated audio signals in vehicles with code (810) Sound system, are output over the following path:
- COMAND controller unit
- Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)
- Amplifier for sound system (N40/3)
- Direct line
- Speaker system
The audio output then takes place over the following speakers:
- Left door speaker group (H4/1)
- Right door speaker group (H4/2)
- Left rear speaker (H4/7)
- Right rear speaker (H4/8)
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill) (H4/27)
- Subwoofer speaker (H4/29)
The audio signals for the subwoofer travels from the COMAND controller unit to the amplifier for sound system via MOST and from there, via direct lines, to the subwoofer amplifier (N40/9) and then to the subwoofer speaker.
On vehicles except CODE (810) Sound system, final amplification of the audio signals is carried out by the COMAND controller unit, and output takes place by means of direct lines via the following speakers:
- Left door speaker group
- Right door speaker group
- Left rear speaker
- Right rear speaker
AM tuner function sequence (MW/LW/SW)
For the MW and LW radio frequency bands, the useful signals are broadcast using amplitude modulation (AM). These signals are demodulated by the AM tuner integrated into the COMAND controller unit. In other words, it separates the useful signals (audible frequencies) from the carrier signal (inaudible).
Function sequence for FM tuner with phase diversity (FM/ VICS)
For the FM radio frequency band, the useful signals are broadcast using frequency modulation (FM). These signals are demodulated by the FM tuner integrated into the COMAND controller unit. In other words, it also separates the useful signals (audible frequencies) from the carrier signal (inaudible). The COMAND controller unit also enables an additional reception-specific changeover between the two antenna amplifiers.
Function sequence, disk and MP3
A 1-disk DVD player is integrated in the COMAND controller unit . This DVD player can play the following media and formats:
- Video DVD
- Audio DVD
- DVD-ROM (Audio/video data)
- Audio CD
- CD-ROM (Audio or video data)
- MP3
The user guidance for controlling the DVD functionality (e.g. track selection) and the display of supplemental information (e.g. track) takes place via the display of the COMAND controller unit. On vehicles with code (810) Sound system, data exchange takes place between the COMAND controller unit and sound system amplifier over MOST.
The audio output takes place over the following speakers:
- Left door speaker group
- Right door speaker group
- Left rear speaker
- Right rear speaker
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Subwoofer speaker
The audio signals for the subwoofer travels from the COMAND controller unit to the amplifier for the sound system via MOST and from there, via direct lines to the subwoofer amplifier and then to the subwoofer speaker.
On vehicles except CODE (810) Sound system, final amplification of the audio signals is carried out by the COMAND controller unit, and output takes place by means of direct lines via the following speakers:
- Left door speaker group
- Right door speaker group
- Left rear speaker
- Right rear speaker
Music Register function sequence
The integrated hard drive in the COMAND controller unit enables files (in MP3 format) to be stored from the CD/DVD over the SD interface and then called up as desired.
