GF82.61-P-3011RA Route Calculation, Function
- with CODE (352) COMAND operating and display system
- except CODE (491) USA version
- except CODE (498) Japan version
After inputting the destination on the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3), the route is calculated and constantly updated by the navigation processor . It can only be calculated within the digitized map areas. The calculated route is the prerequisite of the destination guidance system.
Route calculation
Using the CD-ROM map data, the destination entered and the instantaneous position, the navigation processor calculates the route to be driven. It takes roads and attributes, such as one-way roads, turning prohibitions, road classes, ... (insofar as these are available), which are read from the CD-ROM map, into consideration during calculation. In this case, the operator is able to specify the manner in which the route is to be calculated:
^ Fastest route
^ Shortest route
^ Dynamic route
^ User defined route
When "dynamic route" is selected, traffic messages received over radio (FM/RDS or D-network) are stored in the traffic data memory integrated into the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) and automatically taken into consideration in calculating the route. The route is then calculated for optimized time similar to the option "Fastest route". A message is output that the route has been recalculated taking the traffic messages into consideration.
With "User defined route", the following types of roads can be eliminated from route calculation:
^ FREEWAY
^ FERRY
^ TOLL
As of 1.7.02 the turnpike roads are marked in color on the map.
The navigation processor in the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) then makes up a list of the streets and junctions to be driven following route calculation. This route list i used for destination guidance. It may also be displayed by calling up the "Information" menu.
Route updating
When the driver deviates from the calculated route, a new route list is calculated by the navigation processor. In this case, the current position and the direction of travel are taken into consideration, and the new route is optimized accordingly. The message "New route" appears on the display and "NEW RTE" appears in the instrument cluster (A1).
Journeys outside of the digitized map area
If the vehicle leaves the digitalized CD-ROM map area (e. g. driving in a multi-level car park), the route cannot be calculated or updated. "OFF ROAD" appears on the display. On leaving the limits of the map (e. g. foreign countries) "OFF MAP" appears. Destinations which lie outside of the digitalized map area cannot be taken into consideration on calculation of the .
Detouring around traffic jams with the "Traffic jam" feature.
With the jam button, the operator can have a detour route calculated when:
^ there is a traffic jam straight ahead
^ the driver wants to have the section of the route on the freeway eliminated because construction sites or traffic jams are probable.
Quick entry into the TC function (information for calculation of a dynamic route) is possible by pressing the jam button on the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) for t ≥2 s.
