Remove/check/install Front Axle Brake Pads
- with CODE (949) EVOLUTION sport package
- with CODE (950) EVOLUTION AMG sport package
Inspect
DANGER:
- Risk of poisoning from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury from brake fluid coming into contact with the skin and eyes.
- Pour brake fluid only into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid.
CAUTION:
- See notes on handling brake fluid.
- See notes on repairs to brake system.
DANGER:
- Risk of death, Death may result if vehicle slips or topples from the lifting platform.
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
1 Raise vehicle.
2 Remove wheels
3 Check lining thickness of brake linings (43) and condition of brake disks
4 Check fixed caliper (31a) for leaks and dust seal for damage
- If the fixed caliper is leaking or the dust seal is damaged, replace front axle brake caliper.
Remove/Install
5 Disconnect left front brake pad contact sensor (S10/1) on the connector for left front brake pad contact sensor (S10/1x1)
NOTE: Removal on the right side is analagous to the left side.
CAUTION: See note on installing contact sensor for brake lining wear indicator
6 Using a suitable punch, hammer out retaining pins (41), remove lining retainer plates (31d)
NOTE: Installation: Using a suitable punch, hammer in the retaining pins (41) as far as the stop. Pay attention to correct seating of lining retainer plates (31d).
7 Pull brake pads (43) out of fixed brake caliper (31a)
CAUTION:
- Installation: Do not use any sharp or pointed objects for cleaning the brake pad guides so that the boot is not damaged. In the process the marking of the brake pads (43) must point in the running direction of the corresponding wheel in order to prevent brake noise
- Only brake pads approved by Mercedes-Benz in pairs may be fitted.
- Brake pads (43) should be disposed of as special wastes. The local authorities can provide information as to whether disposal is also permitted via industrial refuse similar to household refuse.
8 Press left front brake pad contact sensor (S10/1) out of the pad backing plate of the brake lining (43)
NOTE:
- Removal on the right side is analagous to the left side.
- Installation: Defective contact sensors should be replaced.
CAUTION: See notes on installing brake wear indicator contact sensors
9 Press back piston using resetting device
CAUTION: Draw off some brake fluid beforehand, to prevent the brake fluid reservoir overflowing when pressing back the piston.
NOTE: On the front axle 4-piston fixed brake caliper in each case secure the opposing pair of pistons with plastic wedges to prevent them from sliding out. Press back the other pair of pistons with the resetting device.
- If the piston is difficult to move then replace brake caliper on front axle.
10 Clean perforations in brake discs
11 Install in the reverse order
12 Check brake fluid in brake fluid reservoir and correct if necessary.
