- up to Model Year 8
With dynamic route guidance each traffic situation message from the relevant traffic information service is taken into consideration. The information from the regional providers is used to do this. The driver can receive information on the current traffic situation from the Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS).
Dynamic route guidance, function
The incoming information on the traffic situation is sent using special signals. These can be transmitted as FM or infrared signals. The signals from the so-called VICS 3 media box (traffic data recorder) are prepared and decoded by the FM or infrared receivers attached to the vehicle.
The antenna signal travels on a coaxial line from the VICS antenna splitter (A28/10) straight into the internal VICS (Vehicle Information and Communication System) of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), where the information that it contains is processed. Then the map appears on the display.
The VICS 3 media box for dynamic route guidance is a dealer option, but the connecting interface is available in the vehicle when it comes out of the factory.
The internal VICS (Vehicle Information and Communication System) is not suitable for dynamic route guidance without the external VICS 3 media box.
The traffic data recorder decodes and selects the traffic messages that affect the selected stretch and the surrounding area, and forwards them to the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) on request. Notification that the route has been recalculated and timed taking traffic messages into consideration, is provided.
Traffic information radio channel function
Road users are provided with the latest traffic information on information signs provided by regional traffic stations (with a fixed transmission frequency) that are installed in certain locations on roads and highways.
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) gives drivers the opportunity to listen to regional traffic information in different regions by pressing the "Traffic Information" button.
The traffic information is only transmitted regionally and not nationally. This makes it difficult to produce a comprehensive and up-to-date list of traffic jam information. Dynamic route guidance is therefore not always possible.
The traffic information stored in the traffic data recorder is automatically erased after t = 0.5 hours. The maximum number of messages that is stored is 100.
The decision as to whether the route should be changed is made by the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). It mainly depends on the route selection that is entered.
For route correction the traffic data memory requires a current "location list" from the navigation processor Each stretch of road and each striking feature (e.g. expressway exit) of the road network detected is clearly defined by means of a number. The "location list" is originally stored on the navigation digital versatile disk (DVD). The decoded traffic messages are marked on the map using suitable symbols. They can also be displayed as clear text.
