Side impact collision
If a side-on collision is detected by the left sidebag and windowbag sensor (A53/1) or the right sidebag and windowbag sensor (A54/1), the body lateral acceleration data are transmitted to the restraint systems control unit (N2/7). The restraint systems control unit (N2/7) checks the plausibility of the data.If the data is plausible the following squibs are ignited if a side-on impact occurs at the left-hand side of the vehicle:
- Left front sidebag squib (R12/20)
- Left rear sidebag squib (R12/11)
- Left rear windowbag squib (R12/22)

If a side-on impact occurs at the right-hand side of the vehicle:
- Right front sidebag squib (R12/21)
- Right rear sidebag squib (R12/12)
- Right rear windowbag squib (R12/23)

The front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor (B48) registers whether or not the front passenger seat is occupied. If the front passenger seat is unoccupied or a child seat has been fitted, the right front sidebag squib (R12/21) is not triggered.

If the seat occupied recognition is malfunctioning, the right front sidebag squib (R12/21) is triggered for safety reasons.
