- with CODE (527) COMAND APS (with navigation)

The location of the vehicle, the direction and distance to the destination (after destination entry) are determined with the aid of the navigation system. The navigation system calculates the data for reaching the destination (navigation). The navigation system is activated by pressing the "NAV" button on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).
A navigation processor with digital versatile disk (DVD) drive for reading the digital map data is integrated into the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).

If the navigation DVD is not in the drive, the message "Please insert navigation DVD" appears in the navigation display.

This message is intended to ensure that the user inserts the right DVD.

The DVD drive of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is also able to play audio CDs.

Destination entry
The destination is entered using menus on the control unit and is processed by the navigation processor.. The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) offers the following alternatives for destination entry:
^ Address input
^ Destination memory
^ Destination with map
^ Special destinations (e.g. railway station, airport etc.)
^ Travel guide
^ Last destinations

Predictive text input
While entering a destination the letters which are still missing are completed from an existing list. The input aid is based on the destination and the street input for navigation. In the "Points of interest" menu, the submenus of "Near other locations" and "National destinations" are supported. The "National destinations" menu is subdivided into an additional submenu.

Dynamic supplementation
This dynamic supplementation is implemented with the manual entry of the destination. During entry of the destination, letters not yet entered are supplemented from a list. The supplemented characters have a black background. Deleting can be accomplished character by character.

Position finding
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) continuously calculates the location of the vehicle using the following methods:
^ Global Positioning System (GPS) position finding
^ Basic position finding (dead reckoning)
^ Map-supported map matching

The navigation processor calculates the most probable position by continuously comparing the results returned by these 3 methods.

Route calculation
The route is calculated by the navigation processor in accordance with the specified destination, or automatically, after a deviation from the suggested route has taken place.
With dynamic navigation, the route calculation is automatically influenced by including traffic information received at no cost via Radio Data System (RDS), Traffic Message Channel (TMC) or from an external provider by telephone. The calculated route is stored in the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).

Route guidance
Navigation starts once the navigation processor has carried out the route calculation 3 types of display can be selected for graphic navigation:
^ with map
^ with map and symbol display before turn-off points
^ with symbol display (guide symbols)

It is possible to change at will between the 3 types of presentation. The navigation is also supported by voice output from the vehicle loudspeakers.
