Design of 2-stage driver airbag
^ The housing of the driver airbag unit is screwed on in the center of the steering wheel and is padded towards the driver's side. The cover, inscribed with the Mercedes logo and the words "SRS AIRBAG," is pre-slit to allow the airbag to escape.
^ The gas generator provided with 2 acid-free solid fuel units is located in the housing. The gas generator is connected via a filter to the airbag which is folded up. The bag itself is made of a high-quality, tear-resistant woven nylon fabric.
For ignition, each solid-propellant charge is equipped with its own detonator.

^ The electrical connection of the squibs from the rotating steering wheel to the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) is made via the clock spring contact (A45) and the vehicle wiring harness.
^ In order to avoid erroneous deployment, the squibs are equipped with short-circuit bridges which short-circuit the connections of the squibs automatically when the coupling is separated.
