AR46.20-P-0600P Remove/Install Steering Gear

DANGER:
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the hydraulic hoist and position the four support plates below the hoist support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

NOTE: Assessing the steering gear when repairing a vehicle damaged in an accident

1 Remove front wheels
2.1 Extract oil from power steering pump supply reservoir
2.2 Unclip feed hose from power steering pump supply reservoir
3 Extend adjustable steering column completely, push out

NOTE: Necessary for separating steering coupling.

4 Switch off easy entry function for driver's seat and steering wheel

NOTE: Vehicles with memory

CAUTION: Otherwise the driver's seat and steering wheel move to a different position, e g when the driver's door is opened or closed Damage to the upper frame can occur when the holding device is installed.

NOTE: It is switched off using the buttons on the steering wheel in the "Comfort" menu on the multifunction display.

5 Turn steering wheel to center position (front wheels in straight-ahead position) and secure

CAUTION: The steering wheel must not be turned when the steering coupling is detached otherwise the clock spring contact will be destroyed.

6.1 Remove lower engine compartment paneling
6.2 Remove bottom section of sound-proofing capsule
7 Press track rod joint (10a) out of steering knuckle assembly
8 Dismount exhaust shield (105d) on firewall below steering coupling (25)
9 Unscrew bolt of steering coupling to steering shaft (25a)
10 Pull lower steering shaft (80a) up and out of steering coupling (25)

CAUTION: Do not use force (hammer blows, excessive leverage), because the lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to lateral dynamic effect and can be damaged

11 Unscrew oil lines from rack-and-pinion steering (23)
12 Dismount retaining shield (1g) at front axle carrier (1)

NOTE: For this step unscrew bolts (23b) and (23a)

13 Support rack-and-pinion steering (23) with pit or assembly lift
14 Dismount bolts of rack-and-pinion steering at front axle carrier (23g)
15 Dismount retaining plate of oil lines (23q) at rack-and-pinion steering (23) and pull out oil lines

NOTE: Seal off line connections with plugs

16 Remove threaded plate (23n) of rack-and-pinion steering (23)
17 Release rack-and-pinion steering (23) carefully and remove
18 Check rubber mount (21) of rack-and-pinion steering mounting for signs of damage and replace if necessary
- Refer to Remove/install rubber mount (21) of rack-and-pinion steering mounting Liquid lubricant (Naphtolen H)

CAUTION: Replace self-locking nuts and bolts

19 Insert threaded plate (23n) of rack-and-pinion steering (23)

CAUTION: Replace threaded plate

20 Insert rack-and-pinion steering (23) and screw onto front axle carrier (1) with bolts of rack-and-pinion steering to front axle carrier (23g)

CAUTION: The bolts (23g), the threaded plate (23n) and the bolted connection area must be free of oil and grease, in order to guarantee a proper seating.

21 Mount retaining shield (1g) with bolts of retaining shield onto front axle carrier (23a)

CAUTION: The bolts of retaining shield to front axle carrier (23a), the threaded plate (23n) and the bolted connection area must be free of oil and grease, in order to guarantee a proper seating.

22 Mount retaining shield (1g) with bolts of retaining shield onto front axle carrier (23b)
23 Insert oil lines and mount retaining plate of oil lines (23q) onto rack-and-pinion steering (23)

CAUTION: Replace O-rings in order to avoid oil leakage

24 Screw on oil lines at rack-and-pinion steering (23)

NOTE: Front left and right side

25.1 Turn rack-and-pinion steering (23) to center position
25.2 Turn rack-and-pinion steering (23) to center position and fit steering coupling (25)
26 Push on new locking plate (25f)

NOTE: Until the lug catches in the steering coupling (25)

27 Push lower steering shaft (80a) up to stop into steering coupling (25)

NOTE: At the same time observe pivot of steering coupling (25) and groove of lower steering shaft (80a) (arrows)

CAUTION: Do not use force (hammer blows, excessive leverage), because the lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to lateral dynamic effect and can be damaged

28 Screw on bolt of steering coupling to steering shaft (25a)
29 Mount exhaust shield (105d) onto firewall below steering coupling (25)
30 Mount track rod joint (10a) onto steering knuckle
31 Dismount clamp of feed hose from power steering pump reservoir
32 Fill and bleed power steering pump
33 Check steering for function and leaks

NOTE: The covering cap sits on top of a grease padding A small amount of escaping grease is to be regarded as normal and must not be confused with leakage

34 Install front wheels
35 Check toe on front axle and adjust if necessary
36.1 Install lower engine-compartment encapsulation panel
36.2 Install bottom parts of noise encapsulation
