AR68.10-P-1000Q Remove/Install Instrument Panel
DANGER!
Risk of injury. Injuries may result when performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units.
- Store airbags with exit surface pointing upward, do not expose to temperatures above 100 °C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply.
1 Completely move adjustable steering column out and downward
DANGER!
Risk of explosion from explosive gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns from swallowing battery electrolyte. Risk of injury through burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries
- No fire, sparks, naked flames or smoking.
- Wear protective gloves, acid-resistant clothing and safety glasses. Pour battery electrolyte only into suitable and appropriately marked containers.
2 Disconnect ground cable of battery
3 Remove instrument panel bottom section on driver's side (2)
4 Remove instrument panel bottom section on passenger side (3)
5 Remove paneling on A-pillar (4)
NOTE: Left and right side
6 Remove cover on center console (5)
7 Remove speaker in the instrument panel (1)
NOTE: Only unlatch cover of speaker (6) in instrument panel (1) and remove.

8 Unscrew bolts (7) at reinforcement of center console (8)
9 Unclip top covers at instrument panel (1) and unscrew bolts (9)
NOTE: Left and right side
- See Special Tools below
10 Unclip cover at steering column
NOTE: At bottom of steering column.
11 Unscrew bolts (10) at strut (11)
12 Unscrew bolts at steering column cover (12)
NOTE: 4 in total
13 Unscrew top bolts at steering column (14)
NOTE:
Installation: Position top and bottom bolts at steering column (13, 14).First of all tighten top bolts at steering column (14).
14 Unscrew bolts of front passenger airbag (15) to instrument panel carrier (1)
- Screw for passenger airbag on instrument panel carrier = 8 Nm
15 Detach connector from ignition squib 1 passenger side airbag (R12/4)
16 Detach connector from ignition squib 2 passenger side airbag (R12/5)
17 Remove instrument panel (1) through passenger door opening
CAUTION!
Avoid damage to instrument panel (1).
NOTE:
- Take out instrument panel (1) with helper
- Installation: Guide lines for indicator lamp of Parktronic system with code (220a) Parktronic system (PTS) and lines for speaker through the opening of the upper center nozzle.
18 Install in the reverse order
NOTE:
Installation: Replace self-locking bolts and nuts.
19 Perform basic programming
20 Read diagnostic trouble code memory and erase
21 Perform function check
