When the exterior lights are switched on the exterior lights bulbs are constantly monitored for short-circuit and line open-circuit by the electronics of these control modules:
^ Front SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/1)
^ Rear SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/2)

For the stop lamp no failsafe light function is planned as this function is distributed over three lamps.

The scope of the substitute light operation is dependent on the country-specific version. Flashing functions have priority over continuous light.
If the low beam (E1e2) in the left front headlamp unit (E1) fails and the low beam (E2e2) in the right front headlamp unit (E2) fails the parking lamp/standing lamp (E1e3) and the parking lamp/standing lamp (E2e3) serves as emergency lighting.
