The two squibs of the front passenger airbag are deployed, if:
^ The front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor (B48) has detected that the front passenger seat is occupied.
^ The front passenger seat belt buckle restraint systems switch (S68/4) is operated.
Operational sequence:
^ Depending on the severity of the impact an electrical ignition pulse is delivered from the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) to the front passenger airbag squib 1 (R12/4) or front passenger airbag squib 2 (R12/5) of the gas generator. The type of crash involved determines whether the ignition squibs are ignited simultaneously or in stages.
^ The squib is ignited; in the process a high pressure is generated which is also transmitted to the corresponding pressure chamber.
^ The burst disk breaks due to the pressure rise in the pressure chamber. The gas mixture stored in the pressure chamber can now escape via the outlet duct; the airbag inflates.
^ Under the pressure of the inflowing gas, the inflating airbag tears open the airbag housing and the airbag flap above the glove box and enters the interior.
^ The airbag reaches its full volume within approximately 40 msec.
^ Once maximum volume is reached, pressure is decreased in the airbag immediately. The gas escapes from the airbag via a filter and the airbag collapses.
Disposal
As after an airbag deployment it is not recognizable whether both ignition stages have triggered, the airbag unit must be disposed of accordingly In Germany disposal is possible through the Mercedes-Benz Recycling System "MeRSy". The corresponding legal requirements should be observed in all other countries.
