ON/OFF characteristics
Activation of the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system is done using the On/Off button on the portable CTEL (A34/6). A wake-up pulse sent over the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) means that automatic activation is also possible. This can be initiated via the status "circuit 15 ON", the radio (A2), the radio control panel and navigation unit (A2/56), or the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).
In order to be able to start up the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system it has to be logged into each respective telephone network (e.g. D-net or E-network). To this end the Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) is required which is located on the SIM card.
After inserting the SIM card and the subsequent activation, the user - depending on prompting - must enter the 4- to 8-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN).
This PIN prevents unauthorized use of the SIM card and therefore protects against misuse.
After entering a number incorrectly 3 times in succession, the SIM card is locked and has to be enabled again with the aid of the personal 8-digit Personal Unblocking Key (PUK). This allows entry of a new PIN number. If the PUK is entered incorrectly 10 times in sequence, the SIM card is rendered unusable and it is necessary to apply to the provider for a new SIM card. If the PIN is entered correctly, the portable CTEL (A34/6) logs into the respective service provider's network and the telephone is ready for use.
Switch off characteristics
The UPCI system is deactivated using the On/Off button on the portable CTEL or automatically after the run-on time set on the portable CTEL expires.
Pressing the On/Off button on the respective portable CTEL and subsequent removal of the SIM card renders the portable CTEL inoperable.
Removal of the SIM card may only be done when the portable CTEL has been deactivated, in order to protect the memory chip located on the SIM card from destruction. When the portable CTEL (A34/6) is activated again, the Personal Identification Number (PIN) has to be entered again.
