Function requirements:
In order to use the functions of the communication system, a portable CTEL (A34/6) must be inserted into the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface) (A34/15).

Telephone operation function
The telephone system can be operated as follows:
^ Directly at the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3)
^ Using the multifunction steering wheel, via the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) in combination with the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1)
^ Using voice commands where the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) is installed, with code (813) Voice control system (VCS)
^ Using the portable CTEL

Function
Following a request, e.g. from the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1) transmits and receives the telephone radio signals via the telephone antenna (A2/49a1). If the portable CTEL is being operated, the signals are transmitted via the E-net compensator (A28/3) to the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit and from there they are forwarded to the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface). The task of the E-net compensator is to compensate by amplification for losses which occur due to the higher transmission frequency of the country-specific telephone network.

The display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit shows the reception field strengths in 5 grades when the telephone is operational. All control signals and useful signals (e.g. sound signals with hands-free system activated) are transmitted via the media-oriented system transport (MOST).

The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit forms the interface between the portable CTEL and the MOST.

The battery of the portable CTEL is charged in the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface). The battery is charged automatically as soon as the portable CTEL is inserted in the UPCI [UHI portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface), and this irrespective of whether the portable CTEL is switched on or off.
The COMAND operating, display and controller unit has the following telephone functions:
^ Automatic disabling of telephone card when the personal identification number is entered incorrectly 3 times.
^ Speed dial
^ Display of the name of the party being called in the COMAND display (if the entered number is known)
^ Display of the name of the network provider on the COMAND display
^ Selection from memory lists sorted according to:
- memory location numbers
- Names (alphabetic)
- List of the 10 numbers dialed last

^ Telephone number display on the COMAND display and in the multifunction display (if the telephone number was transmitted along wireless)
^ Automatic muting of audio sources during a telephone conversation
^ Direct dial of call number via the keypad of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, the voice control system, the multifunction steering wheel or the keypad of the portable CTEL
^ Dialing of emergency call even without PIN
^ Making conference calls with 2 subscribers
^ Putting subscribers on hold
^ Switching off hands-free system microphone group (A67/b1)

Address book
Telephone numbers on the Subscriber identification module (SIM) card or in the telephone memory are automatically copied to the address book of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
The following entries are included:
^ Name
^ Address
^ Phone numbers.
^ E-mail address
^ Geographic coordinates (home or office)
^ Manufacturer
^ Notes
^ URL

SMS
In combination with the COMAND control unit, the telephone system features the following SMS functions:
^ Received
^ Reading
^ Delete
^ Store

If SMS are edited, deleted and saved on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, this does not affect the SMS memory of the SIM card.

Sent SMS are not stored on the SIM card. The COMAND operating, display and controller unit compares new SMS from the portable CTEL with the SMS in its own memory. Only different SMS are presented to the user.

Telematic Alarm Identification on Demand function (emergency call system) (TELE AID), with code (530) COMAND APS USA (with navigation system)
This function is operated using the MB-Info and breakdown assistance button group (S93/6) or the SOS/ATA [EDW] switch group (S93/3). The telephone conversation is processed solely via the hands-free system.

The following services are available:
^ Tele aid - emergency call
^ MB-Info call
^ Tele diagnosis
