Workshop Equipment:
1 Open fuel filler flap and filler cap
2.1 Vehicles without stationary heater, code 228:
Cut off the nipple at the fitting (1) on the right fuel tank half with sharp side cutting pliers on the broken line.
Do not damage the fitting (1) when cutting to prevent fuel from escaping. Before cutting off the nipple have a suitable drain hose to hand as fuel flows out when the fitting (1) is opened.
2.2 Vehicles with stationary heater Code 228
Detach fuel hose from fitting (1).
Before removing the fuel hose, have a suitable drain hose to hand as fuel flows out of the fitting (1) when the fuel hose is pulled off.
3 Fit the drain hose (2) to the fitting (1) and insert the hose end into a safety container (3).
Make sure the fitting (1) is not damaged to prevent fuel escaping.
4 Empty the right half of the fuel tank using the drain hose (2) until the fuel level indicator in the instrument cluster displays around "1/2".
5 Pull the drain hose (2) off the fitting (1), seal off the fitting (1) with a closing cap (10) and secure with a hose clamp (11).
Make sure the fitting (1) is not damaged to prevent fuel escaping.
Part no. of closing cap (10): A000 987 97 45
Part no. of hose clamp (11): N900 288 010 001
6 Knock back the felt cover under the right seat cushion.
7 Remove the right closing cap (5) above the fuel pump. To do this, unscrew the sheet metal bolts (4).
8 Unscrew the ring nut (7) using a claw-type wrench (06).
When installing the ring nut, replace sectional sealing ring. The marking on the fuel level sensor must be aligned with the marking on the fuel tank.
9 Rock the fuel level sensor out of the fuel tank.
10 Insert the extraction hose (8) into the right chamber of the fuel tank and empty the right chamber using the Saugmaster device.
Connect ground cable of the Saugmaster extraction device to the vehicle to prevent arcing.
11 Push the extraction hose (8) over the transfer duct (between the right and left fuel tank chamber) into the left fuel tank chamber.
12 Evacuate the fuel from the left chamber of the fuel tank using the Saugmaster device.
Alter the position of the extraction hose (8) several times for this step in order to ensure that all of the fuel is extracted.
13 Install in the reverse order.
