Telephone operation function
The telephone system can be operated as follows:
^ directly at the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3)
^ Via the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and via the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) in combination with the instrument cluster (A1) multifunction display (A1p13)
^ via code (813) voice control system (VCS)
^ via portable CTEL (A34/6)
Function
Following the request, e.g. by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, the telephone radio signals are sent and received via the telephone antenna (A2/49a1) by the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1).
In portable CTEL mode, the signals are transmitted via the E-net compensator (A28/3) to the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface) (A34/4). The task of the E-net compensator is to compensate by amplification the losses which occur due to the higher transmission frequency of the country- specific telephone network. When the telephone is operational, the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit shows the reception field strength in 5 stages. All control signals and useful signals (e.g. sound signals with hands-free system activated) are transmitted via the media-oriented system transport (MOST).
For communication with the MOST participants, the portable CTEL requires an interface, the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit.
The rechargeable battery for the portable CTEL is charged via the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface). The battery is charged automatically as soon as the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface) is active, irrespective of whether the portable CTEL is switched on or off.
In the USA the telephone is only available as a dealer option. However, the vehicles are equipped for retrofitting Motorola, TDMA, CDMA or GSM portable CTELs.
The COMAND operating, display and controller unit has the following telephone functions:
^ Automatic disabling of telephone card when the personal identification number (PIN) is entered incorrectly 3 times
^ Direct dialling of the telephone number via the numerical keypad, display of the name of the person called (if the number entered is known)
^ Dialing from memory lists, sorted by memory numbers, names (alphabetically), list of 10 last dialed numbers, display of telephone number for incoming call (if number is transmitted), display of name (if number is known), reading SMS, editing telephone book entry and note book toggling, remembering number.
With code (813) voice control system (VCS)
The voice control system control unit (A35/11) is connected to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via MOST. The VCS [SBS] is used for telephone operation as well as for some audio operating functions (e.g. station search function, track change function for CD, etc.). The audio source is muted automatically during the phone call. It is possible to listen to the phone call via the speakers.
Hands-free mode
During a phone call it must be possible for the user to hold the conversation via the hands-free system. For this the hands-free system microphone group (A67/b1) is located in the inside rearview mirror unit (A67). From there the microphone signals are passed on via the audio gateway control unit (N93/1) to the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit.
The incoming audio signals are digitized and transmitted via MOST to the audio gateway control unit. There the signals are conditioned and output via the vehicle speakers. Hands-free is controlled via pressing a button "microphone ON", "microphone OFF" on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
Address book
Telephone numbers on the Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card or in the telephone memory are automatically copied to the address book of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
The following entries are included:
^ Name
^ Address
^ Phone numbers.
^ E-mail address
^ Geographic coordinates (home or office)
