Suspension Strut / Shock Absorber: Testing and Inspection

AR32.25-P-1017-02T Checking condition of spring struts
- with CODE (489) Airmatic (semi-active air suspension) [model 211]
- with CODE (489) AIRMATIC (air suspension with continuous damper adjustment) [model 212]

Component Identification:

To ensure the satisfactory condition of the AIRmatic it is necessary to check the spring elements for damage prior to installation.

Front axle (spring strut removed):
It is possible to recognize unpressurized or low-pressure spring struts in that the shock absorber tube (1) is not firm in the outer guide (2), i.e. the shock absorber tube (1) can be moved to and fro in the outer guide (2) without much resistance (arrows).

Furthermore, it must be possible to feel the bellows (3) under the protective boot (4) and the bellows must form a full rolling fold. The protective boot (4) must not be damaged (e.g. cracks).

Unpressurized spring struts are scrap and must not be pressurized and fitted to vehicles under any circumstances!
