Function of automatic control
When the combination switch is turned into the interval position, the automatic wiper control is switched on depending on the rain intensity.
On vehicles as of 1.6.06 (not (United States Of America) or (Japan)) or vehicles as of 1.7.06 (only (United States Of America) or (Japan)) the sensitivity of the rain sensor can be programmed:
^ Low sensitivity:
Combination switch in "Interval 1" position
^ High sensitivity:
Combination switch in "Interval 2" position
The respective position of the combination switch is read in by the steering column module and placed onto CAN-B.
The system determines the frequency of the wiping cycles depending on the degree of windshield wetting. Moreover, light conditions of the surroundings, vehicle speed, and outside temperature are taken into account.
The request by the rain/light sensor is transmitted by the overhead control panel via the serial interface to the driver-side SAM control unit, which actuates the wiper motor accordingly:
^ Individual wiping cycles with a corresponding intermission or
^ continuous wiping with the required speed.
Emergency running
If the communication between the rain/light sensor and the overhead control panel control unit fails, intermittent operation is activated at fixed intervals (approx. 5 sec.).
Wipe function at a predefined speed
Continuous wiping is switched on via the combination switch. The requests are transmitted to the driver-side SAM control unit via the steering column module. The driver-side SAM control unit actuates the wiper motor according to the requests:
Up to 31.5.06 (not (United States Of America) or (Japan)), up to 30.6.06 (only (United States Of America) or (Japan)):
^ For continuous wiping at slow speed (stage 1, approx. 40 cycles per min.), turn combination switch to position "II".
^ For continuous wiping at fast speed (stage 2, approx. 60 cycles per min.), turn combination switch to position "III".
As of 1.6.06 (not (United States Of America) or (Japan)), as of 1.7.06 (only (United States Of America) or (Japan)):
^ For continuous wiping at slow speed (stage 1, approx. 40 cycles per min.), turn combination switch to position "I".
^ For continuous wiping at fast speed (stage 2, approx. 60 cycles per min.), turn combination switch to position "II".
Touch wiping function
For touch wiping, briefly push combination switch in axial direction as far as the detent point. When operated for longer, wiping takes place based on the length of operation.
