- with CODE (233) Distronic Plus up to Model Year 8
MODEL 221 with ENGINE 156, 272, 273, 275, 642, 629
- with CODE (233) Distronic Plus up to Model Year 8

The Park Assist (PAS) acts as a parking aid at vehicle speeds <16km/h, and helps to prevent minor bumps when parking. It uses four short range sensors in the front bumper and two short range sensors in the rear bumper to monitor the area around the vehicle.
Evaluation of the short range sensors via two sensor CANs and actuation of the warning indicators and acoustic signals is carried out by the radar sensors control unit (SGR) (N62/1).

Function requirements
^ "PKAS" (Park Assist) coded in central gateway control unit (N93)
^ Radar sensor system not deactivated
^ "Circuit 61 ON" (engine running)
^ Vehicle speed < 18 km/h
^ Parking brake not operated (see following Table)
^ DIRECT SELECT gear selector switch (S16/13) not in position "P" (see following table)

Activation
The Park Assist is activated automatically when the engine is started. When Park Assist is active, both readiness indicators are lit in the instrument cluster (A1).
When the limit speed of 18km/h is exceeded, the Park Assist and the warning indicators switch to "standby". The warning indicators and Park Assist are not switched back on again until the vehicle speed falls below the limit speed of 16 km/h.

Warning indicators (parking indicators)
The driver-side instrument panel PTS warning indicator (A44/1) is located at the top of the instrument cluster.
The rear PTS warning indicator (A44/3) is located on the rear headliner.
The following warning indicators are active depending on the selector lever position and the condition of the parking brake:

1 LEDs, left vehicle side
2 LEDs, right vehicle side
3 Readiness indicator, left vehicle side
4 Readiness indicator, right vehicle side
A44/1 Driver-side instrument panel PTS warning indicator (all LEDs lit)

The instrument panel warning indicator contains 7 LEDs (5 yellow and 2 red) for the left vehicle side and 7 LEDs for the right vehicle side

A44/3 Rear PTS warning indicator

The rear warning display contains 7 LEDs (5 yellow and 2 red) for the left vehicle side and 7 LEDs for the right vehicle side.

Forward parking
When driving forwards only the data of the four short range sensors in the front bumper are evaluated.
The vehicle is driving forwards slowly and approaching an obstruction:
^ In the instrument panel warning indicator the number of lit LEDs increases as the vehicle approaches the obstacle. The first LED is lit at a distance of approx. 1.0 m Obstructions within the lateral swivel range of the bumper at the side are indicated from 0.6m away.
^ When the vehicle comes within a minimum distance of approx. 0.3 m, the sixth (first red) LED lights up and an intermittent acoustic signal sounds from the instrument cluster.
^ Within a minimum distance of approx. 0.2m the seventh (last red) LED lights up and a continuous signal sounds.

Reverse parking
When reversing, the data from the four short range sensors in the front bumper and that of the two center short range sensors in the rear bumper are evaluated.
The vehicle is reversing slowly and approaching an obstruction:
^ If the speed is >7 km/h, a warning tone sounds from the rear warning indicator at distances from 11 to 2 m from the obstacle.
^ In the rear warning indicator and the instrument panel warning indicator, the number of lit LEDs increases as the vehicle approaches the obstacle. The first LED in the instrument panel begins to light at a distance of approx. 1.0 m and the first LED in the rear indicator lights up at a distance of approx. 1.25 m.
Lateral obstructions within the range of the bumper at the side are indicated from 0.6m away.
^ When the vehicle comes within a minimum distance (in front or behind) of approx. 0.3m, the sixth LED lights up and an intermittent warning tone sounds either from the instrument cluster (for the front) or from rear warning indicator (for the rear).
^ Within a minimum distance of approx. 0.2 m the seventh (last red) LED lights up and a continuous signal sounds.

Trailer operation (on model 221)
When a trailer is hitched to the vehicle the rear area of the vehicle can no longer be monitored by the Park Assistants. The rear warning indicator and the rear short range sensors are switched off.
Detection of a hitched trailer is carried out by the radar sensors control unit via the trailer recognition control unit (N28/1).

Error and warning messages during "Parking Guidance"
The instrument cluster only displays messages for guiding parking for coded Parking Guidance (in the Central gateway control unit).
All warning and error messages of the Park assistant are therefore reported with the title "Parking guidance" instead of "Park Assistant".

Deactivation
Deactivation of Park Assist is possible via the PTS OFF switch (S6/2s12). The LED in the PTS OFF switch indicates the status of the Park Assist. If the LED is lit, the Park Assist is deactivated. If the LED is off, the Park Assist is activated. Each press of the PTS OFF switch changes the status of the Park Assist.
The LED in the PTS OFF switch remains lit (Park Assist deactivated) even after an automatic shutdown of the Park Assist due to a detected fault or emergency operation of the on-board power supply.
Following each engine start, Park Assist is automatically switched back on (LED in PTS OFF switch is off).

Shutoff
In addition the radar sensor system can be shut off via the left or right multifunction steering wheel button group (S110, S111) in the "Settings" menu, menu item "radar sensor system" of the instrument cluster.
When the radar sensor system is switched off in the instrument cluster, the Park Assist is automatically shut down and can no longer be reactivated using the PTS OFF switch.
The driver can reactivate the Park Assist if required "only" by switching on the radar sensor system manually (except when the radar sensor system is deactivated automatically) via the menu in the instrument cluster.
The Park Assist is only a warning function and does not perform any control functions by itself, such as braking the vehicle.
