Function
The interior illumination (IBL) system implements the illumination of the vehicle interior. The master control unit for this is the overhead control panel control unit.

The following control options for switching on/off are available:
- automatic, when unlocking/locking the vehicle via the central locking system (CL [ZV])
- automatic, when opening/closing a door
- automatic, when opening/closing the trunk lid
- automatic, depending on the position of the rotary light switch
- manual, when pressing a corresponding switch

With code (551) Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]) when the anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]) is triggered, the following lamps are switched on immediately without dimming:
- Front dome lamp
- Left rear interior lamp (model 221)
- Right rear interior lamp (model 221)
- Left coat hook lamp (E15/24) (model 216)
- Right coat hook lamp (E15/25) (model 216)

By removing the transmitter key (A8/1) from the EIS [EZS] control unit, the front dome lamp and the rear interior lights are switched on dimmed. They are automatically switched off after the run-on time has elapsed, which can be set via the COMAND controller unit.

Function Illumination:

Ambiance illumination, function
The ambiance illumination can be switched on and off as follows:
^ Circuit 15 On or circuit 15 Off and circuit 58d > 0 %
The ambiance illumination lights up permanently at the brightness level set in the COMAND controller unit.
^ Circuit 15 Off and opening door
The ambiance illumination lights up with 100 % brightness and is switched off after 5 min.

^ Unlocking vehicle
The ambiance illumination lights up at 100 % brightness and is switched off after 30 s.
^ Circuit 15 Off and closing all doors
The ambiance illumination lights up at 100 % brightness and is switched off after 8 s.
^ Locking vehicle
The ambiance illumination lights up at 100 % brightness and is switched off after 3 s.

Ambiance Illumination:

Control illumination, function
The switch and controls illumination is activated when
^ Rotary light switch is set to "Standing lights" or
^ Rotary light switch is at position "Automatic" and the rain/light sensor signals "Night".

The brightness of the switch and controls illumination can be adjusted via the switch and controls illumination/Night View Assist display brightness control (S6/2r1) integrated into the cockpit switch group. The brightness control is read in by the upper control panel control unit via the upper control panel LIN. The upper control panel control unit transmits the signal of circuit 58d in steps of 0 to 100 % on the interior CAN.

The following control units are supplied with circuit 58d via CAN:
^ Via interior CAN
- Front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module
- Rear control unit (N22/6) (model 216)
- AAC [KLA] control unit (N22/1)
- Door control units
- Overhead control panel control unit
- EIS [EZS] control unit
- Central gateway control unit
- Rear air conditioning control unit (N22/4) (with code (582) Rear air conditioner)

^ Via central CAN (routed by the central gateway control unit)
- Instrument cluster (A1)
- COMAND controller unit

^ Via telematics CAN (routed via the central gateway control unit and the COMAND controller unit)
- COMAND display
- Front central operating unit
- Left rear display (A40/5)
(with code (864) Rear entertainment system)
- Right rear display (A40/6)
(with code (864) Rear entertainment system)
- Audio/video controller control unit (N66/3)
(with code (864) Rear entertainment system)
- RCP [HBF] control unit (N72/2)
(with code (864) Rear entertainment system or code (406) Rear multicontour seat)

^ Via chassis CAN (routed by the central gateway control unit):
- Steering column module (N80)
- Radar sensors control unit (SGR) (N62/1)
(with code (233) Distronic Plus)

With circuit 58d applied, the control units actuate the switch and controls illumination for the particular controls that are connected.
