GF54.30-P-2001CW Information/warning Messages, Function
- up to model year 08

Information/warning messages, general
There are various ways in which the instrument cluster (A1) can output messages:
^ Visual information/warning messages
- Travel distance display (A1p7) (without code (442) Comfort multifunction steering wheel) or multifunction display (A1p13) (with code (442) Comfort multifunction steering wheel)
- Indicator/warning lamps

^ Acoustic information/warning message The acoustic signals are generated as follows:
- Actuation of internal speaker: "Gong" at a frequency of f = 1 Hz
- Actuation of internal warning buzzer (A1h1): warning tone at a frequency of f = 2.5 Hz
- Actuation of turn signal lights function check, acoustic (A1h2): clicking sound

The messages output by the travel distance display or multifunction display are displayed for t = 5 s and are either acknowledgeable messages (low priority) or non-acknowledgeable messages (high priority).
Messages of high priority have priority over messages of low priority With certain high priority messages, a warning signal highlighted in red is also output.
Low priority messages can be confirmed via the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110).
They are then stored in the message memory. High priority messages cannot be confirmed and are automatically stored in the message memory.
The messages can be looked at in the Service menu.

The following systems and functions can request information/warning messages via the instrument cluster:

Cruise control
The display for the cruise control function consists of several subfunctions. These are:
^ Cruise control display
^ Variable speed limiter display
^ Permanent speed limiter display

Function sequence for cruise control display:
If the cruise control is activated via the cruise control lever (S40/4), the set speed is shown in the travel distance display (A1p7) on vehicles without code (442) Comfort multifunction steering wheel.

On vehicles with code (442) Comfort multifunction steering wheel, the segments for the stored speed illuminate in the multifunction display (A1p13) up to the maximum speed.

Function sequence for variable speed limiter display:
If the variable speed limiter is activated via the cruise control lever, the set speed is shown in the travel distance display. In the multifunction display, the set speed is shown by the segments illuminating from the start of the scale up to the stored speed.

Function sequence for permanent speed limiter display:
Via the instrument cluster, the speed can be permanently limited to a value between 160 km/h (e.g. for operation of winter tires) and the maximum speed.
This is indicated in the travel distance display or multifunction display just before the stored speed is reached.

The permanent speed limiter can only be switched on via the corresponding menu in the instrument cluster.

ESP
If the ESP is switched to passive mode using the ESP button (S6/1s5) while the engine is running, this is indicated by the Electronic Stability Program warning lamp (A1e41) illuminating permanently. Faults are indicated via the antilock brake system indicator lamp (A1e17) and the travel distance display or multifunction display.

Supplemental restraint system
If a fault is detected by the supplemental restraint system control unit (N2/10), the supplemental restraint system indicator lamp (A1e15) is actuated by the instrument cluster.
In addition, a message is displayed by the travel distance display or multifunction display.

PRE-SAFE
If a fault is detected by the left front reversible emergency tensioning retractor (A76) or right front reversible emergency tensioning retractor (A76/1), the supplemental restraint system indicator lamp is actuated by the instrument cluster. In addition, a message is output by the travel distance display or multifunction display.

Exterior lights
If one or more defective lamps is detected by the following control units, this is indicated by a message in the travel distance display or multifunction display:
^ Front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1)
^ Rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2)
^ Left front door control unit (N69/1)
^ Right front door control unit (N69/2)
^ Trailer recognition control unit (N28/1) (for code (550) Trailer hitch)

Tire pressure loss warner
If the Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/4) detects significant pressure loss via the signals from the rpm sensors (L6/1, L6/2, L6/3 and L6/4) (different wheel speeds due to change in circumference), this is indicated by a message in the travel distance display or multifunction display.

Tire pressure monitor
If the tire pressure monitor control unit (N88) detects relevant pressure loss via the tire pressure sensors (A69/1, A69/2, A69/3 or A69/4), this is indicated by the tire pressure monitor warning lamp (A1e66) illuminating.
In addition, a message appears in the multifunction display.

Audio/communication/navigation
Information from the communication systems installed in the vehicle is displayed in the multifunction display.
The instrument cluster receives information from the radio with auto pilot system (A2/56) or COMAND controller unit (A40/3) via the interior CAN.

Function sequence of emergency call system
Vehicle-related services are shown in the multifunction display. If the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) detects a defect during its self-test or if the emergency call system is activated, a message is issued.

Function sequence of wiper system
If intermittent rear wiping is activated via the combination switch (S4), a message appears in the travel distance display or multifunction display.

Memory adjustment
The instrument cluster issues an acknowledgement tone when a memory position is stored.
The request to issue this acknowledgement tone is transmitted by the driver seat control unit (N32/1) or front passenger seat control unit (N32/2) to the instrument cluster via the interior CAN.

Keyless Go
If no transmitter key (A8/1) is detected in the interior compartment or the electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5) is not in position "P" or "N" during a start attempt, an acoustic warning signal sounds and a message appears in the travel distance display or multifunction display.
These requests are transmitted to the instrument cluster by the KEYLESS-GO control unit (N69/5) via the interior CAN.

Doors OPEN warning
If an open door, open trunk lid (model 204.0) or open tailgate (model 204.2) is detected at a speed v > 3 km/h, an acoustic warning is output via the instrument cluster and a message appears in the travel distance display or multifunction display. The status of the doors is detected by the rotary tumbler switches (A85s1, A85/1s1, A85/3s1 and A85/4s1), the status of the trunk lid or tailgate is detected by the trunk lid rotary tumbler switch (M14/7s1) (model 204.0) or tailgate rotary tumbler switch (M14/7s1) (model 204.2).
The respective status is read by the front door control units or rear SAM control unit and made available to the instrument cluster via the interior CAN.

Lights on warning
If the driver door is opened with circuit 15C OFF and standing lights/low beams ON, the instrument cluster issues an acoustic warning and a message in the travel distance display or multifunction display.
The status of the front door rotary tumbler switch is read by the front door control unit and made available to the instrument cluster via the interior CAN.

Parking brake warning
If the parking brake indicator switch (S12) is actuated at a speed v > 5 km/h, an acoustic warning is issued by the instrument cluster and a message appears in the travel distance display or multifunction display.

In addition, the brake fluid and parking brake warning lamp (A1e7) is actuated.
The signal from the parking brake indicator switch is read by the front SAM control unit and made available to the instrument cluster via the interior CAN.

Vehicle speed warning
At speeds v > 120 km/h, the instrument cluster issues an acoustic warning.
At speeds v < 117 km/h, the acoustic warning is deactivated. The wheel speed is determined via the rpm sensors. The signals from the rpm sensors are read by the Electronic Stability Program control unit and made available to the instrument cluster via the chassis CAN.
The instrument cluster computes the speed based on the wheel speed.

Key warning
An acoustic and visual warning is issued if:
^ Circuit 15R is OFF and
^ Exterior lights switch (S1) is in position "Auto" and
^ Driver door is open and
^ Light sensor (B38/1) (without code (345) Rain sensor) or rain/light sensor (B38/2) (with code (345) Rain sensor) reports "Night"

Country-dependent seat belt reminder warning
The following signals are evaluated by the supplemental restraint system control unit:
^ Left front seat belt buckle switch (S68/1)
^ Right front seat belt buckle switch (S68/2)
^ Occupied status of front passenger seat

The corresponding signals are made available to the instrument cluster.

The instrument cluster issues a country-specific visual and acoustic warning.

Engine oil level warning
The oil level check switch (S43) is installed in the oil pan to monitor the engine oil level.
It is read by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) (with gasoline engine) or CDI control unit (N3/9) (with diesel engine). If necessary, the ME-SFI [ME] control unit or CDI control unit transmits a message to the instrument cluster via the chassis CAN. The instrument cluster then issues a visual warning message via the travel distance display or multifunction display.

Brake wear indicator
The wear on the brake linings is determined by the front SAM control unit via the right front brake wear sensor (S10/2) and right rear brake wear sensor (S10/4).
If the wear is excessive, a warning message is issued by the travel distance display or multifunction display.

Brake fluid level indicator
If the fill level of the brake fluid reservoir is too low, this is detected by the brake fluid level switch (S11) and transmitted to the instrument cluster via the interior CAN by the SAM control unit. The instrument cluster then issues a visual warning message via the travel distance display or multifunction display.

Coolant level
If the coolant level is too low, the coolant level switch (S41) transmits a signal to the front SAM control unit, which forwards this signal to the instrument cluster.
The instrument cluster then issues a visual warning via the travel distance display or multifunction display.

Windshield washer system fluid level
If the fill level of the washer fluid reservoir is too low, this is detected by the windshield washer system fluid level switch (S42), read by the front SAM control unit and the information is made available to the instrument cluster.
The instrument cluster then issues a visual warning via the travel distance display or multifunction display.

Turn signal confirmation
The acoustic turn signal light function check provides acoustic feedback on the activated turn signals or hazard warning system.

Visual feedback is provided by the left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) and right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2). The instrument cluster actuates the acoustic turn signal function check and turn signal indicator lamps to match the turn signal cycle.

Tank cap OPEN warning message
If, at a vehicle speed v > 5 km/h, the instrument cluster receives a signal from the ME-SFI [ME] control unit or CDI control unit via the chassis CAN that the tank cap is still open, the fuel reserve warning lamp flashes at a frequency of f = 2.5 Hz. The message "Tank cap OPEN" appears in the instrument cluster at the same time.
