- up to model year 08
Component Identification:
The fuel supply system makes an adequate quantity of filtered fuel from fuel tank available to injectors (Y62) for all operating conditions and at an adequate pressure (injection pressure). It is regulated and monitored by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) and fuel pump control unit (N118).
The fuel pump (M3) suctions the fuel out of the fuel feed module and pumps it through the fuel filter to the fuel manifold (single line system). In doing so the fuel pressure is limited by the pressure limiting valve to approx. 3.8 bar.
There is a check valve at the inlet to the fuel filter which prevents reduction of the fuel pressure when the fuel pump is switched off.
Fuel pump actuation
Switching on of the fuel pump takes place if the signal "Fuel pump ON" is received by the fuel pump control unit. This signal is sent as a discrete signal (signal with a certain voltage value) and as a CAN signal (redundant) via the Drive train CAN (CAN C) from the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.
In order to regulate the fuel pump via a PWM signal (pulse width modulated signal) the fuel pump control unit receives the CAN signal "fuel requirements" from the ME-SFI [ME] control unit. The current fuel pressure is detected by the fuel pump control unit via the fuel pressure sensor (B4/7). The information is also sent via the current fuel pressure from the fuel pump control unit to the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.
The fuel pump control unit evaluates the current fuel pressure and specification of the fuel requirements and actuates the fuel pump appropriately. The fuel delivery is regulated variably from 0 to 130 l/h depending on the fuel pressure of 3.8 bar depending on the fuel requirements.
