Function requirements
^ Status "circuit 30 ON" or "circuit 15R ON"
^ Mobile phone and COMAND controller unit (A40/3) are switched on
^ Mobile phone system operating error-free
^ One mobile telephone network is available in sufficient strength and quality
^ Mobile phone electrical connector (X39/37) is connected to communication control unit (N123/6)
^ Compatible mobile phone is connected to pre-installed connector or Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone in the vehicle and logged on to the COMAND controller unit
^ The following provider settings have been completed:
- Connection name, dial-in number, telephone name
- DNS server 1 and 2, proxy server, port number, APN
- Time limit, data communication, mail account
- Mail password, mail address, user, homepage
- Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) server (for receiving emails)
- Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server (for transmitting emails)

No more than 3 providers can be set.

The function is described with a mobile phone attached to the connector. Any differences with a mobile phone not attached to the connector and one operated using Bluetooth are described as information points in each respective component function.

General
The email application enables the user to manage his/her emails (e.g. to read or compose).
The following email functions are available:
^ Receive and read emails
^ Compose and send emails

The email function consists of the following component functions:

Operating instructions
Emails can only be composed, read and sent over the Audio/ COMAND control panel (A40/9) and the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8).

Receive and read emails function sequence
Incoming emails are received by the COMAND controller unit in the following way:
^ Multifunction antenna (A28/11)
^ Discrete line
^ Plug connection
^ Discrete line
^ Communication control unit
^ Discrete line

Emails can now be read by running the email application in the "ComTEL/telephone" menu item of the Audio/COMAND display. This is done with the aid of the "TEL" phone button on the COMAND controller unit and the Audio/COMAND control panel.

The control signals from the COMAND controller unit telephone buttons are processed internally. The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded over the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.
The menu item, email application and the selected email are shown on the Audio/COMAND display by the COMAND controller unit over a low voltage differential signaling (LVDS) line.

On a mobile phone not connected to the connector and operated over Bluetooth, the COMAND controller unit receives emails in the following way:
^ Mobile phone antenna
^ Bluetooth antenna (A2/91)
^ Discrete line

Compose and send emails function sequence
Emails can only be composed and sent over the Audio/ COMAND control panel and the Audio/COMAND display in the email application in the "ComTEL/telephone" menu item of the Audio/COMAND display.

The email application in the "ComTEL/telephone" menu item is selected using the "TEL" phone button on the COMAND controller unit and the Audio/COMAND control panel. The control signals from the COMAND controller unit telephone buttons are processed internally. The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded over the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit. The menu item, email application and the composed email are shown on the Audio/COMAND display by the COMAND controller unit over a LVDS line.

Emails are then sent to the receiver by the COMAND controller unit in the following way:

^ Plug connection
^ Discrete line
^ Multifunction antenna

On a mobile phone not connected to the connector and operated via Bluetooth, the COMAND controller unit sends emails to the receiver in the following way:
^ Discrete line
^ Bluetooth antenna
^ Mobile phone antenna
